Show Review: Rag & Bone Pre-Fall 2014

My style has taken a notably more relaxed turn this year, thus I was pleasantly surprised with Rag & Bone’s Pre-Fall 2014 lineup. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville were inspired by 90’s British street style, full of its active wear and effortless cool. Active wear that of course never saw the inside of a gym, but echoed that sporty chic that has pervaded the 2013 market so heavily. Comprised of only black, white, and grey, it’s clear the brand wants its legion of “It” girls to go for the less is more approach for the season.

The collection kicked off with a leather inset bomber jacket and matching athletic-inspired trousers that gave the feeling of a sweatpant, naturally with a more luxurious spin. Sneaker-inspired shoes anchored the looks in leather with contrast lace-up fronts. A white tuxedo vest lent structure when juxtaposed with sweatpants, while varsity jackets tied at the hips of the models added a dose of ease.

A sporty collection would be nothing without a little mesh and Wainwright and Neville put the skin-baring fabric everywhere from the neckline of a leather-detail jumpsuit (one of my personal favorites here) to the hem of relaxed tank dresses.

When paired with a scroll design, mesh was given a dainty spin, outputting more of a lattice-work, crochet feel. The masculine versus feminine push and pull couldn’t be ignored when skirts and dresses in the fabric were paired with sweatshirts and long track jackets. I’ll forgive Rag & Bone for the scrunchies: they were after all decidely 90’s, but certainly not something today’s fashion set will be sporting.

Celebs love Rag & Bone and I can definitely see Rihanna and Khloe Kardashian in a one-shoulder cutout LWD or a short-sleeve, jersey-inspired mini dress: both will look killer with pointed-toe pumps and a set of head-turning curves.
