Show Review: Prada Fall 2012

In what could perhaps be nod to the upcoming Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institution’s exhibit chronicling her decades-long career in fashion design, Miuccia Prada reached into the archives of the famed Italian house to inform the mood for her Fall 2012 collection. In a great hall, outfitted with a purple carpet printed with large, geometric shapes, the designer sent a series of colorful, embellished pieces down the makeshift runway.

You won’t find any frothy, lace-adorned gowns here. In fact, you won’t find your traditional red-carpet worthy fare. For fall, Miuccia serves up a (relatively) more practical offering of tailored woolen coats, tunics, skirts, dresses, and ankle-skimming pants. The color palette is limited to shades of purple, orange, mustard yellow, a tiny dash of blue and a meaty helping of black.

This extremely self-referential offering draws inspiration from a fall Prada collection from 1996. Miuccia updates her geometric prints with modern silhouettes and gem embellishments to boot.

Saucy bust-reaching center slits on dresses were made modest, layered over tunics, skirts, and pants. Models sported stick-straight flat ironed locks, blackened eyes contrasted by orange-tinted brows, toting structured doctor’s bags and compact purses. High heeled criss-cross strap Mary Janes were bejeweled, decked in print, and colorblocked in contrasting hues.


I love that Miuccia resurrected her old prints, and I love these jewel-encrusted wares. I am however, rather disappointed that she chose to cast only a single black model in the show. Those orange pieces would have looked amazing on Nyasha Matonhodze, Jasmine Tookes, or even Marihenny Rivera.
