Show Review: Ports 1961 Fall 2014

Designers are often inspired by a slew of things for their seasonal collections, but Fiona Cibani was influenced by just one woman for her Fall 2014 collection for Ports 1961: English actress Charlotte Rampling. A 70’s photograph of Rampling by world-renowned photographer Helmut Newton was all Cibani needed to get her creative juices flowing. The impetus rendered itself in the collection’s androgyny and effortless blend of contrasts including starched textures playing against those that were flexible and the juxtaposition of masculine tailoring against feminine detailing: all known Newton signatures.

There was a prominent focus on military and utilitarian design here from cargo pockets to belted leather coats. Even the palette lent itself to the idea in tones of white, brown, army green, navy, and black. Naturally, the inspiration was given a feminine flair with keyhole detailing, thigh-high front slits, curve-hugging silhouettes, and sultry sandals.

Cibani showed that winter white is indeed carrying into the Fall 2014 season, with a slew of looks in the clean shade.

Fur and shearling covered the collars of double-breasted, notched lapel peacoats and oversized cozy shrugs. The warm pieces didn’t completely make sense with the sandals shown, but I’m sure the stylish ladies purchasing Ports 1961 have a multitude of cold-weather booties in their arsenal.

Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and Diane Kruger are fans of the brand and the collection’s black wide-leg jumpsuit and croc jacquard button-front frock will impress all three. The designs at hand will also work perfectly for photocalls and TV appearances, as some are polished and pretty without being overly ornate.
