How many different ways can one wear suit separates? If you ask Jean Paul Gaultier, he’d probably tell you the options are limitless. He certainly showed it in his offerings for Fall 2012 couture, kicking off the show with a parade of tailored black suiting pieces, each imagined and re-imagined into a new beast.
Three-piece suits were updated with asymmetrical silhouettes, saucy cutouts, billowing dusters, and jackets draped askew. Even the men’s suits strayed from tradition: corsets took place of cummerbunds, and croco harem pants were paired with a sculpted cream jacket. Luxe textures like shearling or oh-so-touchable velvet brought the obligatory air of luxury to the show.
Gaultier takes a turn for the opulent, but maintains his quirky point of view with gilded gowns, decorated with metallic geometric print, peeking under oversized fur jackets. Witchy floor-sweeping frocks brought a sinister edge to red carpet looks.
The designer also served up a few fringed pieces, a timely nod to 1920s glamour, with The Great Gatsby film due out very soon. Stylish young women will no doubt be looking for a modern update on the classic pieces, and Gaultier is happy to oblige.
These offeringsdo not skimp on glamour. Gaultier serves up yet another collection brimming with drama and unflappable luxury. I’m (of course) drooling all those fur coats! While some of these looks might be a little too… flamboyant for the more traditional fashionista, I think on the right person and with proper styling, the wackiest pieces could be genius. Which starlet (or celebrity fashionisto) could you see in some of these looks?
What do you think?
