Show Review: Gucci Pre-Fall 2014

For Pre-Fall 2014, Frida Giannini renounces the glitz that Gucci has clung onto so tightly for something altogether more structured and menswear-inspired. Chock full of eye-catching hues and tailored silhouettes, the brand focuses on functional, everyday designs, instead of its go-to evening wear.

The collection commences with colorblocking and a nod to masculine shapes with a black leather blouse layered under a burgundy sweater and pink structured coat. The look is anchored with rust-colored seamed, ankle-length trousers and the brand’s iconic horsebit loafer in a matching shade. The layered ensembles continue with furry toppers, even shaggier jackets, and leather biker pieces, all given more of a menswear vibe with black deerskin caps.

The pieces give true meaning to the phrase “ready to wear”, with a multitude of trouser styles from those with a slight bootcut to creations with a retro-inspired high-waist.

Prints give the ensembles added pops with zoomed-in feral patterns and painterly stripes, splattered on collarless jackets, silky blouses, a frock with a plunging v, cozy turtleneck sweaters, and warm angora coats.

There are a few looks for ladies of a simpler style persuasion with a nod to classic femininity: peplum belts cinching the waists of pleated dresses, easy crepe separates paired together for studies in monochromaticity, a flare-waist coat that feels more McQueen than Giannini but is stunning nevertheless, and leather-accented designs that provide functional ways to add edge to every modern-day, sartorially-minded woman’s wardrobe. The fashion house’s diamante-patterned handbags also lend an air of refinement in clutch, bucket, and large double handle tote shapes.

Giannini commits to showing some leg in mini dresses and thigh-baring skirts, juxtaposed against leather accents including Mod-chic coats, sky-high platform boots, and unexpected, oversized sleeve cuffs.

The brand is one of the most sought-after season after season for the red carpet and there are a few pieces here that can certainly work on the likes of Naomie Harris, Zoe Saldana, and others. Frocks with glittering embellishment will allow their wearers to sparkle and shine for the paparazzi while a long sleeve, animal print gown in black, beige, and white will surely make a statement at a stylish soirée with a sleek chignon and dewy skin.
