Show Review: Givenchy Spring 2014

In recent years, Givenchy has become more known for its trendy t-shirts and sweatshirts than for its legacy of careful attention to detail and elegant tailoring, established by the house’s founder, Hubert de Givenchy . So, for Spring 2014, Riccardo Tisci pared everything down, eschewing the Madonna faced shirts and cartoon like Bambi prints in favor of African and Asian inspired gowns.

Models sporting crystal encrusted masks or fresh faced beams showed off lithe silhouettes in jersey creations, with liquid like fabric draping, twisting, and hanging in various formations to reveal peeks of skin on the torso and chest.

Even footwear was relatively understated–you won’t find a must have heel or cone like plastic infused stiletto in the bunch! Flat sandals allowed the focus to remain on the form–a tactic that will undoubtedly appeal to the super luxury customer who prefers top notch fabrics and unique silhouettes over the fly-by-night Rottweiler emblazoned crewneck.

But it wasn’t all so serious. A few prints came into play, namely yellow and orange stripes, along with African landscapes uplifted by sequins, beads, and bright tones.

For evening wear, Tisci paraded a series of light catching gowns that beg for a twirl down the red carpet. Deep decolletages and billowing skirts seem designed for a siren like Rihanna.

The collection was a strong step away from the commercial, though I could see the small amount of prints still making their way onto a blockbuster t-shirt. If anything, socialites like Marlo Hampton and Kim Kardashian will undoubtedly slink to an evening engagement in a jersey creation. Though the prices will inevitably be less democratic, I could see these fabrics working on a wide range of body types.
