• Show Review: Givenchy Menswear Spring 2015

Givenchy has become a brand of larger than life motifs: rottweilers, Madonnas, Maasai warriors, and so much more, thanks in large part to Riccardo Tisci. For the iconic French fashion house’s Spring 2015 Menswear collection, he pared back on all the pomp and circumstance and returned to the origins of his signature designs with buttoned-up austerity, expert tailoring, suiting, and the athletic-inspired attire both Tisci and the brand have become known for. Sheer skull caps graced each of the models’ heads, adding that quintessential Givenchy edge and street sensibility. There were also a few ladies looks for good measure — steeped in seduction.

The fit skimmed the figure, the lapels were notched, and the shoulders were strong: all coming together to radiate power and confidence.

The starkness of the lineup was broken up by a baby’s breath floral print (gypsophila to be exact) and artful paint splatters, sprawled across cargo coats, skinny trousers, tank tops, and the contrast striped flaps of shorts.

The collection concluded with on-trend pearl embroidery — adding romance and that expected Givenchy gaudiness we all have come to know and love. The looks made quite the statement when anchored by studded chunky wingtips.

Will athletes and rappers flock to the season’s pearl-encrusted wares? I’m fairly certain that anything Tisci designs is instantly coveted by the sartorially-inclined, but this showed a kind of restraint that we haven’t seen from him in quite some time. He might be ushering in a different aesthetic for Givenchy which would definitely be refreshing and exciting.
