Gareth Pugh is fashion’s crowned Prince of Darkness, but he pulled back a bit from his heavy, futuristic designs for Spring 2013 and channeled something more medieval, regal, and romantic. The first look set the tone: a sleeveless, high neck, cinched waist gown paired with a veiled mantilla hat (you might recognize one from Lady Gaga’s Alejandro video): so beautiful and serene that one could not help but instantly be intrigued. Then the collection burst into leather with pants, sculpted bustier tops, a floor-length cape on Jeneil Williams, and open-toe booties which might be a big hit with the fashion set for the season because of their functionality.
Pugh became quite attached to billowing bell bottoms and wide-leg pants, which gave a menswear-inspired yet simultaneously bohemian vibe to the collection.
It wasn’t all about neutrals for the season: fiery red pieces added zest including beautiful turtleneck gowns, capes, and a pair of wide-leg trousers that were among the most wearable designs in the offerings.
Last, but not least was fringe detailing which fell elegantly yet powerfully off of turtleneck dresses and long tops. These were among my favorite designs in the collection and were easily some of the most functional: great for pairing with tights and flat boots or skinnies and your favorite point-toe pumps.
