There is no luxury spared at Fendi, where fur and leather abound as the fashion house’s signatures. This always makes an interesting case for Spring, as the industry waits with bated breath to see how Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi reimagine the textures for the season, in ways that will be chic, but mindful of transitioning temperatures. Functionality usually only applies to the accessories, but for Spring 2013 that was not the case, with some truly functional separates shining through alongside the brand’s out of this world statement-making outerwear and dresses.
Colorblock leather trousers and shorts were juxtaposed with wearable pleated and three quarter-sleeve blouses while easy dresses were imagined in alligator print, serving as layering pieces under coats and over shirt dresses. Jackets were the silhouette du jour from a baby blue cropped leather on Jeneil Williams to a colorblock blazer that will surely make its way to the racks of fast fashion retailers at more affordable prices.
Fur was presented in clever ways: mostly in the form of bright cropped jackets, but also on the hem of a landscape print collarless coat.
How could one forget the shoes and bags? Colorblock clutches and loafers with metallic cube-embellished heels had the feeling of Lego gone high-fashion, while the brand’s classic Baguette and Peekaboo tote were reworked in allover dots. Pentagonal sunglasses were simultaneously modern and ’70s chic.
This was a really solid collection from Fendi, with equal parts functionality and fun. The shoes and handbags will definitely be on the arms and feet of every “It” girl the globe over. Nicki Minaj will be trying the cropped furs on for size without a doubt and the offerings’ quirky sandals and clutches must find their way into the closets of Rihanna and Solange Knowles. Can we expect Joan Smalls for another round in the season’s ad campaign or perhaps one of the newer models of color like Grace Mahary or Tsheca White? Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
