Duro Olowu doesn’t believe in making meek or safe clothing and his fans and the fashion industry thank him for it. His latest collection for Spring 2014 is unabashedly bold, chock full of his dazzling prints and unique silhouettes. The drama is on high, with a real effort given to powerful, statement-making designs.
Varying florals play on a v-neck dress with batwing sleeves, while a snakeskin cape hangs whimsically over a frock boasting diverse, colorful dots: it’s all dizzying, yet intoxicating simultaneously.
Silhouettes celebrate volume and fluidity with bohemian flare: Olowu is not in the business of bodycon and I must say it’s quite refreshing.
It will be interesting to see which designs are picked up for retail and adapted for celebrity styling, as First Lady Michelle Obama is an avid fan of the brand. Some of the designs are way too abstract for real-life wear (boxy patchwork print capes for instance), but might make for head-turning street style moments next season.
Most intriguing are some of the softer designs that are still brimming with prints yet even more loaded with romance. A sheer tie-waist blouse falls below the knee and oozes amour in shades of jade and pink, while a floral print getup is finished with ruffle hems and and a breezy maxi skirt.
What do you think of Duro Olowu’s latest?
