Show Review: Christopher Kane Fall 2013

Christopher Kane is known for his cool, avant-garde fashions and he starts at the source of all creativity for his Fall 2013 collection: the human brain. He surely uses every inch of it to produce his robust offerings for the season, boasting sixty looks: no easy feat for even the most experienced designer. From camo to the brain itself emblazoned on the designs, Kane definitely stimulates his aficionados in all new ways, though never shirking his signature aesthetic.

Outerwear packs the first punch in boxy silhouettes that channel a modern-day Abraham Van Helsing. Fur adds a luxurious touch on the collars and hems of coat and one roomy, buckle-detailed style that will be sure to keep its wearer toasty once the temperatures dip.

Camouflage is a print used to blend in with your surroundings, but the woman wearing Kane’s designs in the pattern will stand no chance of going unnoticed. From an off-the-shoulder dress with fur trim to a boxy coat in the print that almost looks 3-D, I wouldn’t suggest playing hide and seek in these stylish wares.

Kane ups the sex quotient with sheer scroll-detailed dresses and separates, giving a modern spin to Art Nouveau.

Velvet has a moment, lending a plush feel to the designs with  interlocking loop pieces; a little update to the brand’s cutout numbers from Fall 2012.

Kane continues to dip into his archives by resurrecting Spring 2012’s flower appliqués on sheer dresses and skirts, as well as an on-trend sweatshirt.

The human brain is alive on otherwise simple sheaths, blouses, and sweaters. I’m sure we’ll see the motif on a street style star or two during the next Fashion Week go-round.

Let’s dive into the red carpet-ready wear shall we? Kane definitely gives fans Jada Pinkett Smith, LaLa Anthony, and Solange Knowles more than enough looks for the year. My favorite piece is an off-the-shoulder mini dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and feather trim: quite dainty and romantic yet simultaneously goth in its delivery.
