Couture Fashion Week in Paris has begun and one of the hottest tickets each season is Christian Dior. The fate of the famed fashion house still hangs in the balance without an official head designer and head of the studio Bill Gaytten at the helm, but there are no signs of anxiety or stutter-stepping in the brand’s latest couture collection: the looks are strong and devastatingly elegant, in true Dior fashion.  Wearing the looks are some of the world’s top models including Liu Wen, Joan Smalls, Ajak Deng, Sui He, Lee Hye Jung, Karlie Kloss and more.

Spring 2012 Couture for Dior is all about femininity and sophistication, harking back to 1947 when the brand’s signature “New Look” was born with its tailored jackets, cinched waists and full skirts. Girlish fabrics lend an air of ethereality to the collection from chiffon to organza and pleats and ruffled hems take that feeling one step further.

Though an ode to the past, modernity is not lost entirely. Some looks are totally fit for today’s celebrities and “It” girls including a white sleeveless dress with a sheer ombre skirt and an icy gray safari button-down blouse paired with a full pleated skirt.

The showstopping pieces in the collection really are the amazing gowns that Gaytten creates in a variety of silhouettes. From a one-shoulder sheer grape number sure to turn heads to a strapless coral gown fit for a princess, I can already feel that the most stylish women in the world are vying over these looks at this very moment.

If Bill Gaytten can continue to produce masterful collections like this one, there is no reason why he should not get the job of head designer. Yes, it would be fantastic to have an already-known name, but I feel that it is more important for the brand to stick to its DNA, unless they are able to produce a visionary like Louis Vuitton has done with Marc Jacobs. I am truly excited to see how our favorite starlets interpret these powerful looks on the red carpet in the months to come.
