Show Review: Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2013

Though the whole industry is eagerly anticipating the debut of Alexander Wang for Balenciaga, the fashion house’s design studio takes the reigns for the Pre-Fall 2013 collection. Ghesquière became a master of sorts when it came to futuristic dressing, but the brand’s latest creations have a very retro feel, even taking inspiration from Cristobal Balenciaga’s designs from the ’60s. Though still on the cusp of modernity, one cannot help but be transported to the fashions of yesteryear with strong shoulder trenches, billowing-sleeve blouses, and long shaggy furs.

Trend alert: get ready to buy some suits for the season ladies!  Balenciaga and almost every other design house are going heavy on the menswear-inspired silhouettes. Though given some feminine flair with tailoring, the brand is definitely borrowing from the boys for Pre-Fall.

Though heavy on neutrals, the collection does present a number of standout prints. Argyle skinny trousers, an oversized suit presenting two different kinds of paisley, a beautiful nature-inspired pattern: the prints provide the perfect juxtaposition against the mixed textures and embellishments of the majority of the designs. A breath of fresh air in the color palette comes in the combination of a structured peach coat and powder blue trousers: the perfect transitional pieces for those who like a bit of color in their wardrobes.

There isn’t much in the way of red carpet-only evening wear, but there are a few options that might look quite magical with the perfect hair and makeup. My favorite piece is a strapless printed gown that hits right above the knee: a touch of old Hollywood that will look stunning on the likes of Kerry Washington or Nicole Richie.

What do you think? Any looks catch your eye?
