Show Review: Alexander Wang Fall 2013

The fashion industry is waiting with bated breath for Alexander Wang’s debut at Balenciaga, but until then, the designer is whetting our appetites with his namesake collection for Fall 2013. Inspired by the art of boxing with a focus on outerwear (always an A. Wang signature), the designs touch on the brand’s quintessential sporty aesthetic, though there is enough experimentation with luxurious textures and boxy silhouettes to suggest that Wang might indeed be ready for his jump to one of the world’s greatest fashion houses.

Outerwear is made the focus right out of the gate with mohair-trim coats with drop-waists and enough pockets for your everyday essentials. Navy and black two-tone beauties play on boxy, while menswear-inspired silhouettes offer a hint of retro flair. When paired with furry elbow-length mittens, knit beanies, and hooded sweaters, the coats really make a statement.

Pony hair also makes an appearance on ladylike shoulder bags and a rust-colored flowing skirt and biker jacket.

Wang most enjoys pairing fur with leather, which is a trend that’s been on the map for quite some time now. For Fall, he gives it a spin on two-tone knee length coats, turtleneck and pencil skirt combinations, and more.

The brand’s “It” knits are must-have pieces each season and the styles that the world’s most fashionable stars gravitate toward. They have a moment here in mohair and alpaca with iridescent paneling (a little futuristic edge that certainly lends itself to Balenciaga) and the collection’s fuzzy point-toe mules and sandals which might be leading the pack as some of the season’s hottest shoes, pun intended.

There isn’t much in the way of prints, but a burnout pattern is splayed across coats with oversized collars, short-sleeve tops that are sure to be retail hits, an athletic-inspired drop waist dress, and standout outerwear creations in black and silver.

Stars like Rihanna, Azealia Banks, Nicki Minaj, and others can’t get enough of Wang’s looks for the red carpet and onstage performances, but this collection does not feature the ribbed tank dresses and cutout frocks of the past: presented are elegant sequin embellished sweaters with oversized boatneck collars paired with trousers and high neck blouses boasting slit shoulders. Though I’m sure the brand will not stray from their classic, form-fitting designs for fans looking to get a new iteration for the season, this is a much more refined selection for evening that will require Wang’s downtown chic girls to mature a bit.
