Show Review: Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2013

What is it about pilgrims that has designers so enraptured? First, Phoebe Philo channeled the transatlantic travelers for Céline’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection and now Sarah Burton is following suit at Alexander McQueen. She doesn’t stop there when it comes to inspiration: Burton also invokes the clerical dress of the Catholic Church as well as the Amish for her latest designs. Naturally, this is all done with McQueen flair from billowing sleeves to sky-high platform booties.

Though some mini dresses show a bit of thigh, modesty is on high here with a long eyelet-hem coat, a knee-length turtleneck dress showing just a peek of red lining, high-neck capes, and a striking creation taking direct influence from a priest’s robe. One of the most breathtaking pieces in the collection is a red and black chasuble-inspired dress, given a modern edge with a leather belt and chain link pendant necklace. Vatican chic? I don’t think the Pope ordained any of these pieces, but he might definitely recognize a few from the inner workings of his closet.

An impressive baroque-inspired print covers a number of pieces from a long, fur-collar coat to the flared bodice of a black evening gown.

Ladies getting ready to walk down the altar will certainly delight in this collection as some of the designs skew bridal. I mean who wouldn’t want to be married in a high-neck gown with a sheer sweetheart bodice and full skirt? Call me Duchess Catherine and zip me up Sarah Burton!

For those who like to strut their stuff in McQueen on the red carpet and just to get dressed up (think Naomi Campbell, Kim Kardashian, and Nicole Scherzinger), there are more than enough leg-baring styles (paired with thigh-high leather boots of course) and a few stunning gowns that will land just about anyone who slips into them a spot on the Best Dressed list.

Any looks catch your eye?
