Milan Fashion Week is in full swing with a slew of models strutting down the catwalks of both new and old designers. I’m always excited for familiar faces like Joan Smalls and Liya Kebede, but I relish in the moments when new models of color make an unexpected appearance. One such model taking the shows by storm this season is Detroit native Riley Montana:
Montana’s entrance into the industry was no subtle one, as she was cast in Givenchy’s Pre-Fall 2014 lookbook: an amazing accomplishment for any model. Tisci clearly fancies her as she went on to pose for the French fashion house’s Spring 2014 ad campaign. The designer is a champion of new models of color: remember he did the same with Joan Smalls and look where that endorsement has taken her. This is a great sign of things to come for Ms. Montana.
High-fashion glossies have embraced her from a snap in Vogue Paris’s “New Faces” editorial to inclusion in a Love Magazine spread in Valentino.
There’s no doubt that Riley’s star is going to continue to ascend and I cannot wait to see which runways she takes to for the remainder of Milan Fashion Week and the upcoming shows in Paris. Perhaps she’ll land another high-fashion ad campaign this year and a magazine cover.
