Does the Devil wear Prada, Chanel, or both?

In another piece of feather ruffling fashion news, Karl Lagerfeld recently told German Magazine Focus that fashion is about, “dreams and illusions, and no one wants to see round women.” The charming Lagerfeld went on to say that those that decry skinny models are, “… fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television.”

Karl Lagerfeld Round Women

Karl was clearly born in a time before political correctness and tact were in vogue.
He reminds me of those crotchety old men who unflinchingly say whatever’s on their mind, even if their thoughts are totally offensive.
Nothing about fashion surprises me anymore. It’s become a twisted comedy that excludes everyone but thin, European eccentrics…like Karl.

*If you’re truly offended, designer Malcolm Harris started a facebook group called “Boycott Chanel: Real Women Demand an Apology.” LOL. Join here.

*Also, lookie what a reader sent me:

Round Karl Lagerfeld

Seems there’s a little pot/kettle action going on…

Thanks Tamar!

  1. OMG! I thought now was the time for all people in the industry to embrace the “fatshionista,” alas Karl Lagerfeld has proven that are many who do not feel this way. As a “round woman” I laugh softly to myself when reading the article. I though to myself, “Oh Karl, curvy women are slated to take over the world.” LOL

  2. Wow.
Well, he sure did go ahead and put it out there.
He reminds me of Kanye West. There is nothing wrong with having your own opinions, but there is a time, place, and way to say it IF it should even be said at all. Those 2 men don’t understand that concept…but what high fashion designer does? They all speak their minds whether it hurts the next person or not.

  3. He’s crazy. In the past he’s also said that he’s never met an anorexic model, and that most of them are skinny girls who eat hamburgers and pizza but don’t get fat. Anyway, Karl used to be fat, so I think this is his self-hatred coming back to bite him in the @$$

  4. Damn Karl tell us how you really feel/..What we don’t want to see are skeletons. There should be a variety of body types on the runway.

  5. im 5’9 and only 115 lbs….and this offends me…and people wonder why i stopped modeling…people with these opinions eat “soft” people like me for breakfast…come on now karl…you’re a legend.

  6. I can’t stand a man who acts like a bitch! I really can’t!

Karl is truly a a bitter man. Who obviously has scaly, wrinkly possible chapped hands. Honestly, those gloves he has worn for ages makes me wonder what horrible secret is he hiding? He’s looks like the inspiration for Dracula!

I wonder how many of his wealthy clients who may not be a size 0 feel about his statement? I guess being a size 10 I would be considered a horse! He’s always insulting women yet they keep going right back to buy the brand.

  7. Whats so funny about this article is the fact Karl Lagerfeld isnt even attracted to women so of course he doesnt like “round” women cause doesnt know what a real women feels like….duh!

  8. The whole concept is idiotic and outdated anyway. Fashion is not about dreams and illusions for me. It’s about taking pride in my appearance, finding outfits that flatter me in every way, and feeling comfortable. He can keep his outrageous runway sh*t. His audience will shrink as our awareness grows.

  9. what do you think about Tavi, FashionBomb?
    http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/

I looooovvveeee her antithesis to the lagerfeld/de la renta madness of, “Fashion is this and not that.”

that little girl is only 13(?) and already understands that Fashion is amazing because everyone does it, everyday.

Bottom line, F–the haters! Loving fashion is first and foremost about the love.

  10. As a fashion forward large woman with a fair amount of disposable income, I just want to thank Mr. Lagerfeld for saying this before I spent a dime on another Chanel bag, pair of shoes, or lip gloss–you don’t have to be skinny to wear those, and they’ve made a good amount of money off of me, but never again. That catty old nipped-and-tucked thing is not going to be doing his hating on my time OR my dime.

  11. It’s funny that a man who use to be quite obese himself, is now on a campaign to rid the fashion world of everything that is ‘fat’…talented genius yes, but this self-loathing bastard is one hamburger away from become ’round’ again himself.
    smh what a damn hypocrite!

  12. this is hilarious….i love Karl…i think he’s just being funny….i know its offensive but I really don’t think he truly feels that way. If u know anything about Karl he says rude things because its his way of humour…doesn’t make it right but everyone has their own depiction of beauty…but he talks about weight and all of that to be humourous….he’s done it a ton of times in documentries and would laugh and talk about his own weight

  13. Karl has said things like this before, and he’s got some serious self hate issue. I have two problems Malcolm Harris Facebook group about this. 1. Chanel’s target consumers are not facebookers 2. The ‘real women’ statement is offensive, as a 5’9 woman with runaway model type body frame I’m still a ‘real woman’.

  14. Well that’s not nice at all, considering that no one wants to see an old man trying to be cool with outdated sunglasses and a ponytail…

  15. He’s right, nobody wants to see fat people in fashion. They are the antithesis of fashion. He was round himself, as the picture proves, but came to his senses and lost considerable weight. It’s all about discipline, and that is something that fat people lack.
