Today we’re taking a detour from our regular DMV divas with Kimee from Charleston, South Carolina:

She says, ” I studied fashion in undergrad and I’m the assistant fashion editor of Mwari Magazine blog.mwarimag.com

“My style can be best described as follows: I don’t dress for men or attention, I curate looks for fashion.”

“…I’ve always expressed myself through fashion, growing up my father called me Freddy from the hit TV series “A Different World.”

My friends call me the anti-blogger because I follow select fashion bloggers. I’m not interested in Prada/Gucci sending modelesque citizens free clothing to promote, I’m only interested in true fashion sites especially those that promote the African Diaspora. Kudos to the Fashion Bomb team.

“My style icons are Solange Knowles, Ms. Diana Ross, the fierce Grace Jones, the fabulous June Ambrose, and Chloe Sevigny.”

“I live for unique pieces, so I either make them myself or vintage shop. For me vintage/thrifting hunting can be described as the NEW BLACK, check out my “how to vintage shop” video via thefeast.com.”

“I may sound incredibly narcissistic but I’m really a small town, humble gal.”

Thanks for the kudos, Kimee, you look fab!

Our polling system is down (again, grrr!), so leave a comment with your thoughts on Kimee’s style.

  1. I love all the head pieces and bold colors.

The leopard skirt with the split styled with the bow is a little overdone for my taste. But the overly accessorized look works for her….

I wish I could take her on vacation with me, just so she could tie my turbans when I don’t feel like doing my hair. I just can’t seem to get them tight enough, and she has it mastered! :)

  2. Idk I maybe biased because I have SC roots..lol…I love how the colors pop against her skin…my favs are the scarf top and the hot pink turban!

  3. this works for her. i get wanting to be unique but i am over the “i thift shop” looks that some of the bombshells present. not against thrifting at all either.

  4. Love the scarf halter top! She already knows she has a unique sense of style. The looks work for her. Definitely not something most could carry off.

  5. the scarf halter is cute….now off to try and tie one….im sure i will fail lol

  6. Some are the outfits are really great like the scarf she made into a halter and her turbans are awesome. Then I see the leopard print thing and the fur shawl and the all black get up and Im lost. She has great style but some of the photos she has on too many piece and seems to be doing to much.

  7. I love the eclectic looks, for the person above who said she lacks cohesion, we’re all multi-faceted individuals with variegated tastes. Even an avowed brand lover will sometimes succumb to a thrift store find, and vice versa. I love how her look reflects her beliefs. Fashion with a purpose, I dig that.

  8. I debated whether to respond to comments or not but after reading Sticky-n-Sweet words I realize I don’t have. Thanks!! We are now fashion friends in my mind :)

  9. Everyone inquiring the scarf top look, it’s simple. Drape around your neck, criss cross around your bombs (mine are huge so it took some time), and tie in back. The key is to rock a basic bandeau underneath, this allows creative room to safety pin, if the scarf isn’t long enough to tie.

  10. Grace and others inquiring the turban wraps, practice makes perfect hun!! Try viewing youtube how to clips. I started there until I made it my own.

  11. Girl you better WORK!!! I love it!! You stand out and would def make people do a double take with your fabulous self.

  12. Interesting. Some of her looks are hits, but some are all over the place and not edited well. That blue hat is fierce. It was nice to see a variety of looks. I’m not sure I believe her when she says she doesn’t dress for attention.

  13. Ther eisn’t a cohesiveness in the outfits but somehow it works for her. Mwarimag hey? Mwari means God in Shona, interesting.

  14. I love the purple straw clutch and all of her prints! The bow tie and leopard skirt look is over-exaggerated, but overall she looks good!

  15. I lik the cream n white fit and even the blue hat look (sorta) but the rest…has ALOT going on. The all black w/boots..the fur leopard thingy big bow. Im all about vintage but (mixed print) makes her look old. Even the turban..She looks 22-25 (sum pics) n others look 45

IDK..i lik classic pieces w/personality and pops of color. This is a overkill..

  16. @BOOBOO Just what I was going type! 100% Agreed

However, I do like some of her individual pieces just not together.

  17. she definitely has style but it may be a little over the top for me. I love the head pieces and she is a beautiful woman!

  18. I am really excited by the Bombshell.. I love her take on mixed prints, and of course, I want to be the first to attend her Learning Annex course of how to tie a turban! LOL

    <3 Your look, Kimee!!

  19. I love her unique looks, she’s fab and the definition of fashion bomb because she knows what her style is and she works it! LOVE IT!

  20. this is my kind of style…loved every look….she knows what works and shes sticking to it…grace jones is also one of style icons…its very daring to have grace jones as a style icon…if your reading this kimee…i would love to pick your style brain…

  21. She manages to have a lot going on, but makes it look cohesive. I would never think to wear my scarf as a top like that & I don’t think I could get away with it but it works for her!

  22. If there were a poll, I’d say “some hits, some misses.” She manages to look really unique and chic in some pictures, but in others such as the all black outfit and the one with the fur and oversize bow-tie, she looks like she’s doing too much at once.
In an unrelated matter, she did sound narcissistic.

  23. Is the purpose of The Fashion Bombshell daily to comment of the featured bombshell…or is it to comment on the opinion of another blogger, because Sticky-n-Sweet didn’t get the memo! I stand behind my original comment!

  24. She reminds me of Macy Gray…Idk if it’s because I believe they favor each other a little bit or because of the bold/crazy style. Anywho, I like some of the looks and some I don’t care for. I do commend her for dressing the way she wants to and not for others approval; that is very bold of her.

  25. i have mixed feelings about her style. i love the fact that she isn’t afraid of colors and pushing the envelope. something’s too much though, like something’s gotta give, it’s too much SOMEwhere….

  26. omg!!!! she is fab i luv that she is channeling her inner “june ambrose ” very unique style and i luv her vintage earrings simply amazing , great pick claire :)

  27. Fashion is one thing, Style is another. It’s easy to follow fashion, it’s hard to have style. I’m feeling your style young lady.

  28. Claire what happened to the voting buttons??? I like to see the visuals before I dig into the “meat” of the convo :-)

  29. Awwww!!! South Crack’s at it again! Chucktown standup!!! I love her audacity, its refreshing especially for that area:) I like the mix of the florals in the pic of the pleated skirt which I’m feverishly trying hunt down… a pleated vintage skirt. lol!

  30. So after viewing this bombshells looks there really is only one picture where I feel she is doing TOO much. And that was with the leopard and bow tie look. Other than that she pulls off the eclectic look very well. I see some girls try to do this and FAIL..HARD. Now I must also confess that at first I was going to comment that I disliked this bombshells’ style but I realized I was coming from my personal fashion perspective and that was wrong. I think that if were going to be fashion commentators and engage in a fashion dialogue then we should do so objectively. Just saying. Keep up the great work Claire.

  31. Jamie, thanks for the Charleston shout out but DC is my new home. Sidebar West Ashley’s Goodwill is the ish!! I purchased the floral top and skirt there. Get there ASAP!!!

  32. This Bombshell makes my heart flutter…this is my style…fashion/style is supposed to be fun..take risks, have fun with it….at the end of the day it’s all trinkets. : ) Do your thing chica!

  33. your unique style is quite impressive. you make me proud. keep doing you and representing the ( CHUCK). luv ya

  34. “Its fresh that you listen to more than Hip-Hop, can catch you in the mix from beauty to thrift shop” … Glad to see you living out your dream homie, keep pushing.

  35. Thanks to all my family, friends, supporters, and fashion citizens that provided comments. Special thanks to my friends and family, they truly get me and that includes my style. Those that know me, know that everything written and uploaded is proven to be the real ME. To those that thought my looks were overbearing, if I did anything less it wouldn’t be me! However I respect the opinions of those who truly have a style of their own or love the art of fashion. Jay provided the only offensive comment, I’m far from narcissistic. Please understand I’m a writer and I get paid to make words look good.
XOXO Kimee follow me @fashionevryweek via twitter or blog.mwarimag.com

  36. hey Kimee its nice to see charleston represent on fashion bomb Im from charleston and Iive in the Downtown charleston area off of king street it would be nice to have a fashionista buddy to hang out wit I luv yo style I attend charelston fashion week every year and also attend fashion nite out in NYC im on Facebook put in Deidra Singleton send me a friend req

  37. Quirky. And a 1000x’s better than the cookie cutter looks shown over and over and over and over and over and ooooooooooovvvveeeeeerrrrrr!

  38. I’m inspired! Your sense of style is AMAZING! You have such unique pieces and it looks fantastic on you.

  39. Ok, some of you might think I’m being a little too mean. If you submit your photos to fashion bomb you’re asking for a response. I don’t think this is real fashion. Here’s my reasoning behind my statement. If you have a too much and I mean too much going on and your mixing different seasons together it comes across as jean paul gaultier meaning a bit clownish and too far out there. There’s no sense of style to any of her outfits. One shot she looks like June Ambrose which is not original. I don’t want to hurt her feelings because she is a beautiful women but her style begs to differ. I’m sorry if I offended anyone but there’s not one piece that I would love to have.

  40. @ Kimberly

I can appreciate a well thought out argument. This should be a standard many should follow. Just cause you don’t like something does not make you ‘mean’ or a ‘hater’ (I know some think the word hater is old but…..Jesus had haters too; making it an eternal emotion) Jean Paul Gaultier is exactly what I thought of when I saw the pic with the bloomers w/black stockings. Using a fashion reference to discern a look shows knowledge of SOMETHING! Not just on here, “oh girl…..wtf is that?” If more ladies would take this route, I think TFBD would have a sisterhood bond vs. a hater feast.

  41. @Kimberly Please note that I respect your view points. With me you don’t ever have to start a comment “not to be mean”. You opinion is just that, your opinion. So those that get offended by your words are “weak sauce”. Reading the comments has been such an amazing experience but its not the first or last time someone will critique what I fashion. That’s what women do, we check other women out, DUH!!
I concur @Bronze I appreciate a well thought out argument, I love references this let’s me know you’re educated on the subject matter and for that respect is due. I despise those who have irrelevant opinions.

  42. All these comments really crack me up!! We all have our own opinions that we are for which we are entitled. And MY OPINION is that this girl is AMAZING or (bomb.com as a reality star would say) Anyone can be a self proclaimed fashionista, fashion stylist (which are very overused terms to me) but this chick is a FASHION VISIONARY to me!!

    xoxo

  43. @kimmee, That’s why I made the statement some of you because I wanted to get that out to the readers first and foremost. Sometimes people can’t take an opinion just as that “my opinion”. Some people take it as hating which I’m far from. Yes, my style differs from yours and that is why we wear what we like. You are correct the about females dressing for females. I’m just glad you understood where I was coming from and didn’t take offense to my comment because some fashionista’s can take risk and be competely confident and that is you. So much respect back to you.

  44. work it girl…clearly confident and fun loving…turbans are fab and you are tempting me with the scarve top – but I know better. Also am impressed by how open and friendly you are by responding to this post with your advice…loooooves.

  45. @BRONZE,
Thank you for understanding where I was coming from. I just wanted to give what I saw through my eyes. Kimee is not offended. She will continue to do what makes her shine through her eyes and that is all that matter in the land of fashion.

  46. Not a fan. I do not get the sense that she has an inert sense of style with these outfits.

  47. Kimmeeeee!!! Its a beautiful thing seeing you grow into this great fashionistette(I dont even know if this is a word but it will be today lol). You really have come into your own lane and if that means its “extra” or “different” then so be it. If you like it I love it

  48. can’t say i’m a fan. there are so many elements in her outfits that clash and don’t really compliment each other. the floral outfit ages her.
