• The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Joan Rivers Has Passed, Opening Ceremony Debuts Wearable Tech, and NYFW’s Day 2 Schedule

    • Yesterday, comedian and fashion critic Joan Rivers passed away due to complications with throat surgery.  Known most prominently for her role on E!’s Fashion Police — a show that is now on hold as the team decides whether to continue — Rivers is one of the first fashion critics to begin asking those on the red carpet “Who are you wearing?” It’s from there that sites, just like our own, have evolved. Rest in peace to Joan Rivers. (TMZ)

    • As a kick off event of sorts for fashion week, Bill Cunningham and Fern Mallis held a public chat for Mallis’s Fashion Icons program at the 92nd Street Y.  In addition to discussing Cunningham’s personal life — the photographer attempted to study at Harvard for four months — he also seemed to tear up speaking about iconic fashion moments like the infamous “Battle of Versailles.” “It was the greatest night I’ve ever seen,” he said lavishing praise on African American designer Stephen Burrows, who was the only designer to use models of color like Bethann Hardision on the runway for the presentation. • Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have now debuted their first wearable technology bracelet, a device that they call MICA(short for My Intelligent Communication Accessory).  The piece, which features semiprecious jewels and snakeskin, is set to retail for less than $1,000 when it hits Barneys and Opening Ceremony in December. Of the attributes, the device features a curved touchscreen display that allows you to communicate with friends and receive updates from your mobile phone. (Four-Pins)

    • Jason Wu is the latest designer to get some major backing. The designer has sold a majority stake in his eponymous company to the investment firm InterLuxe. No specifics on dollar amount have been reported, but with the infusion of cash, Wu plans to open a flagship and expand e-commerce as well as his handbag collections. (Fashionista)
