• Fashion Bomb Exclusive: Celebrity and Kevyn Aucoin Makeup Artist La Quanna Chong On Spring 2014 Beauty Trends

Over the past year, I’ve become much more interested and invested in beauty. I’m not getting any younger, and I’ve learned from my fresh-faced mother that the key to staying beautiful your entire life is by devoting yourself to a healthy lifestyle — and a set of products that work best for your skin type.

No one knows the business better than celebrity makeup artists, so I was thrilled to chat with La Quanna Chong on how to moisturize your sexy and how the Spring 2014 beauty trends will work best for women of color.

The beauty has been making her way in the industry since 2007. You might recognize her work on Blood, Sweat, and Heels star Demetria Lucas’s A Belle in Brooklyn book cover, red carpet looks for Angela Simmons, Faith Evans, and Gabby Douglas, as well as countless runway shows for the likes of Betsey Johnson and Rolando Santana. Aside from working on her own personal endeavors, La Quanna has also been a Kevyn Aucoin artist for years and she swears by their products.

Spring was a mélange for beauty from bold looks that played with color to fresh faces that focused on flawless skin and strong brows. La Quanna’s main aim is to encourage women of color to participate in the season’s trends, not being afraid to try out the various shades on our wide spectrum of skin complexions like Lupita Nyong’o has been doing so fearlessly of late. She said, “Women of color should definitely have fun and embrace the upcoming trends. From light to dark, women of all complexions can embrace these trends and have fun with them.”

Eyes were all about varying shades of blues, greens, and bronze. To make your eyes pop, “Use the Kevyn Aucoin Essential Eyeshadow Set (Palettes 1 & 4) for a more matte, smoky finish. For a shimmery finish, use a Loose Shimmer in Topaz, Jade, or Lapis. Finish with The Eye Pencil Primatif (Defining Navy, Green or Purple). Place the shadow close to your lash line. Once you have placed the color on the lash line, build and blend upward. Use a soft or natural shade to blend.”

I always go for a fierce cat eye for a night out, so I had to pick La Quanna’s brain on the perfect technique that will allow the design to last all night long. Of the on-trend look, she said, “Mix it up. Use one of your favorite bold colors as your liner or stick to the traditional black liquid liner: Kevyn Aucoin Precision Liquid Liner is a great one. I like to use a pencil and mark where I want the wing to come up and stop. Then, I use shadow or liner – starting in the inner corner of the eyes and gliding up to meet the first dot. Then I take my liner/pen or pencil and connect the liner from the lower lash line, upward to meet the second dot. Use a cotton swab to clean for a perfect line.”

Lips were brighter and bolder than ever with raspberry and orange hues. La Quanna stated that these colors really stand out on women of color, injecting a dose of warmth when juxtaposed against our complexions. Her suggestion? Kevyn Aucoin Matte Lip Color in Timeless or The Expert Lip in Micavel. Don’t like lipsticks? There are other options like Lip Gloss in Absinthia or Hydraa. For long lasting lips – fill lips with lip liner, followed by lipstick and top off with gloss.”

Last, but not least is skin, which is undoubtedly the most important as it builds the foundation for any flaw-free face. There was a wealth of dewy fresh faces on the Spring runways, with light coverage to achieve that natural look. La Quanna remarked that great skin is really the beginning and end of it all: “The key to flawless makeup, is flawless skin, so don’t skip out on skin prep. Moisturize and prime. Use Kevyn Aucoin The Primed Skin Developer Primer (there are two formulations, normal to oily and normal to dry) pick the formulation best suited for you. I like to use sensual skin enhancers – they’re great for all skin types, can be sheer or full coverage, and leave the skin dewy. You can use SSE as foundation, concealers or even highlight/contour.”
