The Fashion Bomb Daily: Kanye West Approaches Fashion Like He Does Music, Melissa McCarthy May Have Lied About Oscars Dress Snub, and Courts To Rule on Nicolas Ghesquiere and Balenciaga in August

Kanye West in Soho

  • Kanye West approaches fashion collections, like his latest collaboration with A.P.C., like he approaches his records. Well, according to APC’s Jean Toitou, he does. About their 14 piece capsule, Toitou told, “Like when it’s something he makes…ten days before it drops… he wants to start from scratch. In music things are so possible, especially with today’s technology, good engineer, good computer, you could stretch time, but in fashion there are so many people involved, from weaving, knitting, choosing the yarn, choosing the color, making the pattern, making the first samples. It’s so much more material, but again, I don’t feel badly about him pushing the limits. So that was the difficulty. But apart from that, it was perfectly easy..” Hmm…perhaps that can explain the somewhat plain, minimalist offerings. See the full collection here. (

  • Melissa McCarthy may have fibbed about her dress hunting experience for the Oscars.  In an interview since the event, McCarthy claimed to have asked multiple designers for a dress, and couldn’t find anyone willing to dress her for the event.  But Project Runway alum Christian Siriano says that he did want to dress her for the awards, and in fact made two gowns for her. “We met with her people,” he said of the process. “She and her stylist chose the fabric and the beading. Quite frankly, she was quite difficult to work with. She wanted some specific things that I thought would not look good on her body. And she was not comfortable with them in the end.” Oop. (NY Daily News)

Balenciaga Spring 2013 RTW

  • The courts will rule in the case involving Nicolas Ghesquiere and former employer Balenciaga on August 27th–if the two haven’t settled their dispute prior.  Ghesquiere holds that the comments he made against Balenciaga–his quote was “I was being sucked dry, like they wanted to steal my identity while trying to homogenize things“– are felt by all designers working for bigger brands.   His lawyer went on to say that the comments did not negatively effect Balenciaga as they claim. • Oscar de la Renta will be celebrated with the opening of “Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style” at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.  The second exhibit of the designer’s work in a presidential library, the exhibit will feature 60-plus mannequins featuring day and evening looks worn by Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Nany Reagan and others.
