Fall 2012 Style Inspiration: What to Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is this Thursday!
Are you doing anything fun? I’m spending mine with family and friends here in NYC, but it seems a lot of you are meeting your boo’s parents for the first time or twirling at dressier affairs!
Hadassah writes, “Claire, please come to my rescue. My boyfriend has invited me to spend Thanksgiving with him and his family. I have only met his parents once before and I don’t think I was dressed appropriately for the impromtu introduction (sassy, low cut maxi dress). Please give me some ideas how I can appear effortlessly chic and comfy while making up for the last time we met.”

Go for safe and comfortable in a chunky off-the-shoulder sweater and heavy weight leather look leggings from Topshop. Show you’re hip to what’s hot with a pair of H&M x Margiela wedge booties, oxblood accents, and a Melody Ehsani Somebody ID bracelet.

If you were wearing something low cut the first go round, head in the opposite direction with this perfectly innocent and holiday ready $148 Fair Isle Ski Sweater from J.Crew:

Offset the patterned sweater with a white button down and bright blue corduroy pants (keep it cheerful). Add a dash of fashion with leopard wedge booties by Diane von Furstenberg (black shoes will work, too) and Ta-Da Kate Spade studs (we threw in the mens version of the J.Crew ski sweater in case you and your man want to match):

Want to give off a bit more of a grown up vibe? Bet on neutral gray, whether rocking a Malene Birger Reindeer Cardigan with jeans or a super comfortable Stella McCartney Intarsia Sweater Dress:

If you feel up to it, slip on a pair of reasonable heels. These booties by Michael Antonio are a steal at $30:

If you’re headed to a restaurant for dinner, slip a snazzy jacket over a white shirt, and complete with a skirt with an elastic waistband (leave room for turkey!):

Exude Obama chic in flats, or opt for heels (love these Prada ankle booties). Cozy up in a cute faux fur coat:

Lastly, if comfort is your only concern, you can’t go wrong with a pair of leggings and an oversized sweater:

Finish with sneaker wedges or flats boots:

I’ll mostly likely be going the jeans and sweater route.
What about you?
