Naomi Campbell by Mario Sorrenti for V Magazine
Naomi Campbell plays up her ‘firy’ image for the DSquared Spring 2009 Advertising Campaign, fist fighting and sparring with fellow supermodel Linda Evangelista:

Very apropos that Ms. Campbell is fighting in designer frocks…
*In other fashion news, it seems Naomi has finally settled the suit filed by her ex maid. You remember, the one she beat down over a pair of Stella McCartney jeans? [NYMag]
Happy almost Friday!
So so far in the New Year, we’ve had plenty of Real Style, Mail Bombs, and Cool Online Finds, but we haven’t had a Style File!
A great person to start with, I think, is Fashion Icon, Supermodel, and a notorious cell phone chucker…
….Naomi Campbell.
Yeah, she’s got an attitude, but homegirl is consistently fierce, fierce, fierce! So fierce, in fact, that we’ll forgive her foibles.
Let’s look at her style:
For Black Tie Gala’s (of which she attends many), Naomi exclusively wears glamorous couture frocks, accented with fur, feathers, and sequins. While she shines on occasion in figure flattering dresses in neutrals…
…and adorns herself in eye catching silver gowns…
…her absolute red carpet rule calls for nothing but black…
..black…
…black…
…and more black!
…fashion stylist Edward Enninful did say that ‘Black on Black is always chic,” no?
Naomi takes her love of all black off the red carpet to the front rows of fashion shows….
…wearing dark fur with skinny jeans or a simple top with a full skirt. The dark color even pervades her more casual moments, as she typically sports black jackets, boots, dresses, and sunglasses…
…injecting a white jacket in the mix….
…for good measure.
All black can seem a bit morbid (visions of going to a funeral come to mind), but Naomi manages to make it work by mixing fabrics, textures, proportions, and throwing accents like bright bags and scarves into the mix. Another benefit of all black: as long as the color is rich, it manages to always look expensive and put together. And you can guarantee that if you wanted to wear that one black item several times in a week, absolutely noone would notice!
I’m sure you already have lots of black in your wardrobe, but you can channel Naomi Campbell in these super chic items that’ll help you stand out in a crowd:

Top Row: Citizens of Humanity Shrunken Knit Vest, $106, www.nordstrom.com; K Karl Lagerfeld Anja Top, $78, www.net-a-porter.com; Leather Blazer, $350, www.armaniexchange.com.

*Naomi even looks hot while doing community service! Check out my March ’07 post on her, titled, “Naomi Sweeps Floors with Flair.”
*Want more Naomi? She’s got a whole archive!
*Did you hear, homegirl is rumored to be dating Hugo Chavez…
…I don’t buy it!
“Coulda copped to a one to three do/Still took it to trial, even though I blew/Crooklyn style, that’s how we do it/Ill gangsters and ain’t got to prove it…” Lil Kim “Whoa”
So with all the Hollywood bad girls doing wrong lately (DUI’s, shootings, slappings of maids and manicurists), I thought it intriguing to look at how a star’s style changes once they’re in the court room, fighting for their freedom. The once outrageous and in your face suddenly become demure, upstanding…and dare I say even classy? Let’s take a look:
When out on the town, Nicole Richie favors dresses in loud, bright colors to offset her hair and skin tone….

…going for a Jackie O aesthetic with a black collared shift, matching black status bag, and face obscuring, shame hiding shades. All excess was abridged, as if to say, “I’m a good girl now!”
Cell phone chucker Naomi Campbell similarly switched it up when en route to court. She normally has no problem strutting her stuff in short frocks in fun feathers and sequins…
…but looked like she could be no the corporate payroll when she went to court in January 2007 for assault…
…rocking a reserved shift, black jacket, stockings, and mary jane pumps. I must give it to her, she still kept it painfully chic in her blunt banged haircut and large black shades. Naomi C keeps it fierce at all times!
I hate to admit it, but cantakerous manicurist hating Foxy Brown holds it down as well. She loves bright colors…
…patterns…
…and deep, deep bra exposing v’s…
…and opted for a buttoned up version during her trial for assault earlier this year. She looked fly in bright colored tops that buttoned at the neck, knee length skirts, tweed suits, and stillettos…
…all accented with fashionable Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi bags.
While everyone cleans up for court, few transformations are as glaring as Lil Kim, whose style we looked at yesterday. She looks slutacious in most situations….
But appeared in court for her July 2005 perjury accusation looking like a secretary! She rocked stale khaki pant suits…
Tailored jackets…
…and gray skirt suits covered with fur trimmed coats…
…fit for a church mouse!

“Welcome to Atlanta where the playas play/And we ride on them things like every day/Big beats, hit streets, see gangsta’s roamin’/And parties dont stop til’ eight in the mornin’”–Ludacris, Welcome to Atlanta.
Wassup Shawties,
I am FINALLY in Georgia! Yesterday I spent all day in the dern airport because DELTA AIRLINES had clearly lost its mind…they were cancelling flights left and right, trying to rebook people for the next day. Insane. Anyway after spending 8 hours (can you believe it?) hanging out in the airport and one hour on the runway, I finally made it home.
When I got to Hartsfield, I peeped Shay and Cristal of Charm School fame…
Source
They ran by in a flash of multicolored weaves and clear plastic heels. I wasn’t quick enough to snap a pic, but I reasoned that seeing them, if only for a moment, somewhat made it all worth it (totally kidding). Enough about me. Let’s get to some mail bombs.
First up, reader Shamecia says, ” I REALLY want to know the designer of the silver floor-length, belted gown that Beyonce wore on the Red Carpet for the BET Awards…”
“Can you or one of the fab new interns find it for me?”
Intern Elita is an ace at these, and she quickly found that Beyonce’s dress was this Dolce & Gabbana frock…
…ripped from the runway of their Fall 2007 collection.
D&G loves the metallic look with the cinched belt. If you recall, Naomi Campbell similarly wore a silver Dolce and Gabbana gown…
…on her last day of community service (I wrote about it here). But um, does Beyonce steal looks as well as acts? You be the judge!
Next, reader Tamika says, “I heart Ciara’s dress in this picture.”
“… Can you find me something similar?”
Doing a quick search, I found something close in this Gold Pleated Trapeze Dress…
…available for $98 at www.ardenb.com.
Lastly, reader Marlea asks, “I just adore the dress that the model is wearing at the end of Akon’s “Don’t Matter” video.”
“The print, length and kimono sleeves make it the perfect tropical vacation dress. Can you please find this for me?”
Elita championed this again, and says, “Figuring out who made that dress would be damn near impossible. But there are lots of people doing similar things for summer.” She recommended the following:
Top Row: Rachel Pally Short Caftan Dress in Mexico, $255, www.pinkmascara.com; ABS by Allen Schwartz Print Kimono Dress, $178, www.nordstrom.com.
Bottom Row: Satin Basketweave Print Puff Sleeve Dress, $178, www.cache.com; Floral Print Kimono Dresses by Anjali Kumar, $308, www.edressme.com.
That does it for celeb queries. Now on to a few general questions.
First, Monique says, “I have to attend a work related multi-day golf and tennis outing this summer. I’m not into either sport, but want to look the part. Can you suggest some work appropriate, yet stylish pieces that would suit a curvy figure? Thanks!”
Of course! There’s nothing I love more than prepping it out in tennis whites and golf gear. Keep it casual yet professional during the day in bermuda shorts and polo tops. For the evening, throw a cute cardigan over a simple, classic shift dress. My suggestions:
Top Row: Egyptian cotton nautical-net cardigan, $88, www.jcrew.com; Joe’s Jeans Bermuda Shorts, $152, shopbop.com
Bottom Row: BCBG Max Azria Pleated Shift, $180, www.nordstrom.com; Lacoste Sleeveless Piqué Polo, $68, www.bloomingdales.com.
Next, The Fashion Bomb enthusiast Lily says, “HI! :) I’m looking for a certain dress. I saw it on a girl at a concert and I have yet to see anything similar to what she had. It’s a knee length, form fitting dress with three quarter-length sleeves. The top was a boat neck cut. If you could please help me find something similar to this dress I’d love you forever!”
Well Lily, you can shower some of that love on Elita, who found a few dresses that came close. We were both fans of this $168 French Connection ‘Dutel’ Jacquard Shift Dress…
…from www.nordstrom.com.
She also found this…
…$48 Lux Deep Scoopback Dress at www.urbanoutfitters.com. It packs a punch…
…with a sexy back detail. Hot!
Lastly, a young lady who calls herself, ‘Frantic in Dallas’ says, “Ok so I have a wedding to attend on 7-7-07 (is everyone getting married on that day??) and my ex boyfriend and his present girlfriend will be in attendance, needless to say I need to look fabulous! I have in mind a fitted strapless dress but have not been able to find what i am looking for. Do you have any ideas of a classy yet sexy evening dress for me?”
So you’ll want to knock your exes socks off without being too obvious. Since it’s a wedding, I’d say keep the silhouette classic in strapless, shift, or babydoll shapes. You can stand out in skin illuminating bright colors and prints. And flash a little leg:) Try these:
Top Row: Silk Woven Print Flutter Sleeve Dress, $98, www.bebe.com; Laundry by Shelli Segal Print Chiffon Halter Dress, $255, www.nordstrom.com.
Bottom Row: Nicole Miller Strapless Print Silk Sheath, $410, www.nordstrom.com; Diane von Furstenberg “Ayuka” Trapeze Printed Mini Dress, $345, www.bloomingdales.com.
Make him nostalgic. And you better catch that bouquet:)
Now for a small contest!
There comes a time when neither I nor the interns can figure it out. We struggle, and search, but come up short. And that’s when we open it up to you.
The readers who can find the make of Rihanna’s dress in this picture (for Renee)
…and the designer of Lauren London’s dress here (for reader Nicole)…
…will win a faux pearl bracelet, necklace, and earring set from the website, All Girls Love Pearls (www.allgirlslovepearls.com)
…in any color you like. Choose any length, color, or setting you want! Pearls are a classic foundational piece in every girls wardrobe. They go with everything. So get to searching!
Have great weekends. I’ll try to survive Hotlanta:)

“I refuse to make a model which will sell in quantity. I do not want all women to look and dress exactly alike. I want them to be as different in their dress as they are in their personalities.”–Paul Poiret.
As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, last night was the Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The celebration was for Paul Poiret…
…a revolutionary Parisian designer who rose to prominence in the early 20th century.

Sketches of Paul Poiret designs
Poiret called himself “The King of Fashion” (kinda like T.I. called himself the King of the South). Poiret’s most noted for eschewing what was then traditional boning, corsets, and petticoats in favor of long flowing Greek and Eastern inspired gowns characterized by lots of embellishments, sequins, trimmings, and vibrant colors. He was the antithesis to Coco Chanel at the time (whose more simple designs were all the rage). He apparently once said about Chanel, “What has she created? Poverty de luxe,” and also called her ‘garconne’ look, “Sterile and Muttonish.” We always like a great fashion catfight, don’t we?
Anyway last night, celebrities, socialites, and the fashionable upper crust came out to the Met to christen the opening of Poiret’s exhibit.
I like to think that all dressed to pay homage to Poiret’s legacy. But while some got it right, others failed miserably.
First the ‘misses’:

Naomi Campbell’s fur and feather embellished knee grazer pays due respect to Poiret, but the ankle boots take this frock from glamorous to ghetto in one quick once over.

There’s a difference between sexy in a sophisticated way, and sexy in a…’wrong side of the tracks’ way. Jessica Simpson tread that line, but unfortunately fell on the side of skid row in this plunging Marilyn Monroe-esque dress.

Kirsten Dunst needs to hire a stylist. This midnight blue and tulle mish mosh looks clownish…

I wouldn’t even wear this outfit to work…
And lastly, Ms. Mary Kate Olsen…

…I honestly have mixed feelings about this dress. I had to suppress my gag reflex when I first saw it, but I must say that she is in line with the Poiret philosophy (feathers accented his signature styles). There’s a difference between feather accents and a feather dress, though…and she seems to be channeling some morbid version of Big Bird. Even though this frock isn’t my favorite, I’ve gotta give it to Mary Kate. It takes a fierce woman to rock this concoction with confidence.
Now for my favorite looks of the night:

Rihanna looks great in this Grecian halter ivory gown, and the sheer black gloves are unexpected accents…

Camilla Belle also uses the Grecian aesthetic to her benefit in this flowing ice blue number. The color complements her skin tone, and the silhouette is simple yet elegant…

Kate Bosworth’s updated shift and short, slick hairdo are reminiscent of Madame Chanel. Kate looks stunning…perhaps her presence shows that two powerhouse design ideals can prevail at the same time. No need for nasty competition!

Jennifer Hudson plays it safe in this one shoulder gown…
And my absolute favorite look was a shocker:

…Cameron Diaz! The color on this dress is searingly beautiful, and the juxtaposition of the raspberry of the dress and the turquoise jewelry is sick. The gown is embellished yet not overdone, and she allows her style to speak through vibrant colors and well plucked jewels.
What do y’all think?
Smootches!
PS The Poiret: King of Fashion exhibit runs from May 9th to August 5th. Find out more information by visiting the Met’s website here.
PSS Want to know more about Paul P? There’s a great article on him in this Month’s Vogue…

…written by Hamish Bowles. The spread features modern designer interpretations of Poiret’s ideas. Pick up a copy and get your learn on.
PSSS I didn’t do my monthly review of Vogue this month (no scanner access), but aren’t we glad one of the world’s next top models is a sister? But then again aren’t we kinda mad she was on the inside flap?
“Naomi hit me…and I loved it.”–T-shirt worn by Naomi Campbell
So, as many of you know, supermodel Naomi Campbell…
…was sentenced last week to 5 days of community service for throwing her cell phone at her maid. A slightly comical, yet egregious offense.
Instead of showing up in out of character flimsy fits or dour duds, she reported for duty every day in true model style: over the top furs, dark shades, and flawless hair. She looked so chic, that readers have actually been writing in asking what she’s wearing!
For example, reader Shantrell asked :
Do you know where I can get the coat that Naomi Campbell wore for her first day of community service? It was a black trench coat that flared at the bottom (kind of like a dress) that coat was fierce and I have to have it!
Reader Angela also asked:
Have you seen Naomi Campbell doing community service? Where can I get hats like hers?
Really now. So I had to take a look at Naomi’s looks to see what all the buzz was about.
On her first day…
I must admit that she looked somber yet sassy in her flared wool coat and lace up boots.
The next day…
…she brought it in a fur, fedora, sunglasses, and stovepipe black jeans.
On March 21st….
…her slick black leather jacket, bucket hat, and smart bag were fierce.
Day 4…
…she might’ve been tired of upholding her ‘glam factor.’ The whole ‘fit looked a tad clownish to me, but the wine colored boots, purple satin top, and high waisted pants screamed model.
No matter, because on her last day…
…her fabulosity was off the meter with her red carpet appropriate Dolce & Gabbana gown, corset belt, and stiletto sandals. She’s a trip.
I figured that if people are interested in her style, I might as well compile items to achieve a ‘Naomi C en route to clean’ look (just for fun!):
Clockwise from top left: Summer Coat, $248, www.fcuk.com; Nine West Ombré Faux Fur Jacket, $118, www.nordstrom.com; Black Felt Fedora, $25, www.amazon.com; Kenzie Shayla Boots, $152, zappos.com
Kenneth Cole Reaction Black Notched Collar Long Leather Jacket, $255, www.bluefly.com; Marc by Marc Jacobs Plastic Contour Logo Sunglasses, $90, shopbop.com
Felt Bucket Hat with Button, $34, www.urbn.com; The Grant Work Tote, $80, www.wilsonsleather.com. Center: Violet Dress Top, $37.80, www.forever21.com;
Rumor has it that Naomi’s auctioning her clothes off for charity…but she might be auctioning her actual work outfit, not her designer digs. Either way, you can channel the essence of the guilty yet glamorous Naomi C.
Smootches!
PS Guy Trebay at the NYTimes talks about Naomi’s bratty behavior and wardrobe changes in the Sunday Styles section from this week. Great article. Read it here.
PSS The Styles section also featured flat shoes for its ‘On the Street’ pictures by Bill Cunningham…
The spread was called ‘Comfort and Style.’ Ummm, do they read the Fashion Bomb???
PSSS The first jacket in the ‘Naomi C en route to clean’ box is *so* cute on! It has the flared out style at the bottom, and the tie waist creates a great silhouette. I was *this* close to buying it this weekend, but French Connection seems to discrimihate on women with ample bosoms…their largest jacket size is a 10?!?! Can’t I be stylish? Anyway, I still might go back and get it…the salesguy said I could have it let out by a tailor (as I did with another jacket). I’ll think about it…for $250, I’d prefer perfection.
