The November 1973 fashion show that took place at the Palace of Versailles is etched in fashion history—a moment that showcased the talents of designers of color including Stephen Burrows and the late Oscar de la Renta and also showcased the talents of black supermodels and icons Pat Cleveland, Bethann Hardison, Billie Blair, Jennifer Brice, Alva Chinn, and others. Robin Givhan wrote about the momentous event in detail in her 2015 book, The Battle Of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into The Spotlight And Made History. That book is now at the foundation of an upcoming HBO film by the same name, directed by none other than Ava Duvernay.
