Hi Fashion Bombers!!  Thank you for sharing your favorite scents with me yesterday. I was reading your responses and loving some of your choices. Wow, this week has flown by, no? I’m working on so many projects right now and can’t wait to share them with you.

UP NEXT: Angelaiam.com. I’m excited!!

At any rate, as you may know, I am very into fitness and nutrition.

My friends and family will tell you I’m always preaching about good health and constantly trying to find new ways to work out! But sometimes I find myself stuck in the same old boring routine.

Now that I’ve moved to NYC, my fitness routine has changed dramatically. In LA I did a lot of outdoor work outs and personal training with Mike T (@forcefitnessinc), who I’ve worked with for over 6 years.

Now, I box. I’ve found a love for Box/Kickboxing. Boxing really helps me tone up. My trainer Nelson (@itscoachnelson) is teaching me the true dynamic of the sport.

I’m always changing the results I want to see with my body. So switching up my exercise routine is great!

As for my diet, I have been a vegetarian for 3 years. I became a vegetarian because of my Uncle Russell. He showed my family a video on vegetarians and I was hooked!

I am a very picky eater. My favorite vegetarian restaurant, Veggie Grill, is sadly in LA. I could eat there everyday. I’m waiting on Veggie Grill to open in NYC. Its an amazing vegan food place.

Have any of you recently become vegetarian? How do you stay in shape? Please tell me your experiences.

~Angie

  1. Yaay- My kind of topic! I’m very much into health and nutrition- I’ve adopted a vegan diet since March (no dairy, no fish, no meats, and no processed foods)- It is a very tedious diet (I cook everything from scratch- no canned veggies or frozen veggies- everything is pretty much fresh/organic)-I’ve never felt better in my life-

I also workout at least 4-5 times a week- spinning, zumba, treadmill/weights, bootcamps- I LOVE IT!! There isn’t an abundance of vegan friendly restaurants where I’m currently located- I’m looking to move back to NYC and can’t wait to do so- the exercise/food scene is so much more accessible and fun!! ;)

  2. Your body looks great Angie! That kickboxing is working in your favor. I might need to add that to my regimen…

  3. I agree with the love for kickboxing. It is an excellent way to get a total body workout. You look great girl!!! Keep it up!

  4. Your body looks amazing. Love the abs. I used to do boxing and jump rope classes and it kept me very fit. Now I try to switch up things with Zumba, Salsa or spinning or a little jogging (not my fav). Diet is such an important part of it as well.

  5. I tried that and it only lasted 2 days. im haitian so when i told my mother she gave me that “Oh oh” haitian know what that mean

  6. Well, come January I would have been, what they refer to as a pesco-vegetarian (fish eating vegetarian), for 11 years. No chicken, no beef and for sure no pork. In the past couple of years I have tried raw…but living in the cold, Canada, it’s hard not to come home to warm food so what I do now is be more aware on how long I cook certain vegetables, for example if I cook kale it’s a quick in and out. I don’t purchase frozen meals or canned meals…I don’t have anything quick in the house…dinner must be cooked to avoid process food (chemicals will kill you!!!). Because I have no self control, I don’t keep treats in the house. I know myself…I am a late night binger and those chips will be gone in a hour.

I am a distance runner. I took up running about three years ago. I went from someone who could not finish a 1K to completing my first half marathon. I now teach running clinics in the evenings, from the beginners to half marathon…in fact I will be teaching another half starting this January. I love running in the winter, who would have thought! I never thought I could be a runner, let alone a distance runner. I have a large bust, very tall, with thick cheerleader muscluar legs. You think distance = willowy/lean. But we runners come in many sizes.

Running has hurt my strength training, before my big accident I use to box but now that i am half blind in one eye I can not spar…that’s when running happened. But because I run so much (4-6 days a week…27K to 60k a week) I feel so tired and the strength training was neglected…so I recently purchased a workout for runners. Something that will balance my muscles, core, and spirit. Running is a mental sport, so you need balance mentally but because you use certain muscles to run, you are in danger if you do not balance your body by working the supporting muscles (think back/abs, quads/hams, etc), so I am hoping this new video pulls it together. I like lifting heavy but I am going to try more of a leaner approach with mostly circuit training. I also love yoga…yoga goes hand and hand with running due to it’s focus on breathing, mental, flexability and core…all important for a runner, so at least once a week I do that.

My life was not always like this, I struggled with understanding food and seeing ‘dieting’and working out as a punishment. I had to revamp my relationship with the two. My life altering accident, the death of my father (divorced from my mother decades ago) who was a skinny man that died from ‘fat’ diseases (borderline diabetes, blood clots, high blood pressure, etc)…the man loved his gravy. Versus my mother who is hitting 65, runs 4 days a week, takes zumba classes and when she feels sick goes into her garden and boils herbs.

Honour your mind body and soul…thank you mom, so sorry it took so long for it to click.

  7. Veggie for 3.5 years checking in (pescetarian prior)! You look great Angela! I need to restart my boxing regimen! Check out Red Bamboo in the village (my fave vegan spot in NYC).

  8. Now this is a topic I can talk about all day! And you look great girl!!!
I tried vegetarianism for about three months. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had. Now, i wouldn’t mind embarking on that journey again or maybe adopt the pescotarian(sp?) diet. I love my baked fish. My goal is to simply eat clean, meaning no processed garbage.
As far as working out, I’m currently into high intensity interval training workouts. Most of the moves are kickboxing and bootcamp type routines. I also like kettlebell weight training and running. I hope to do a half marathon early next year. Your lifestyle encourages me to keep moving forward with my own! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Your body is ripped, yes Angela! I get into the gym 3- 4 days a week and both run and use the elliptical. Working out makes such a huge difference in your mood and skin: I don’t feel the same without it!

  10. LOVE this topic!! I’ve been kickboxing for over a year now and the results are amazing. it definitely helped tone me up. I also strength train and lift weights. many women have to learn that lifting is one of the best ways to ensure not only toning but weight loss. adding muscle helps drastically burn fat. you will not “bulk up” or look like a man if you lift weight naturally (women are not naturally prone to becoming “mannish” without hormones, steroids, etc.) and it defends your body against osteoporosis which we women are so prone to as we get older.

I’ve recently started running and while it’s not my favorite thing…it really works to help slim me out. as for being a vegetarian…I’ve tried it and found that I can’t give up fish so I’m leaning more toward being a pescartarian. I’m going to begin completely phasing poultry out of my diet next year. right now, I don’t eat red meat or pork so I’m ok there. I always say Fitness is a Lifestyle, keep up the good work ladies. Angela, those abs are POPPIN chica!

  11. nice body angela.. too bad i love meat so i can never be a vegeterian but will quit carbs anyday.. i love running, kickboxing(turbo jam) and using the elliptical.

  12. Hi Angela, I work down the street from the Veggie Grill in El Segundo, CA. I will definitely make a visit there now. What are your favorites from their menu?

  13. damnnnn…now THAT is a body. Ive been a vegetarian for 27 years! Good luck to anyone making that transition. Its all about getting as much support as you can (dating or living with people who share the same habits as you). And if you are eating meat, make sure you know there’s nothing injected into it (hormones, antibiotics), and the animal’s prior living and feeding conditions. It’s hard work but oh so worth it.

Your body is yours and yours alone. Its a must to cherish it. No one else will for you! Thanks, Angie.

  14. I recently started using myfitnesspal to track my calories and so far I love it! It’s a great companion that makes you more aware of your intake which in turn helps your overall fitness goals.

  15. Love this post! I’m a “weekday vegetarian/vegan” meaning that during the week I make and eat vegan or vegetarian meals and on the weekends I may have fish or chicken. I’ve been doing this since January and it’s helping me ease into full-time veganism.
As for workouts, I live in Barbados and love anything outdoors- running, hiking, swimming. I miss my strength training though and will get back into it soon!

  16. Hi Angela! Im not a vegetarian but I’ve been diagnose with celiac disease so I have to be careful of what I eat so I mainly eat chicken, fish and lots of veggies and fruits. I must say that I don’t eat a lot of chicken and fish like I use to but I found a new love for veggies which has me conjuring up vegetarian/vegan meals during the week and fish or chicken every now and then. As for exercise I do kickboxing, lots of walking and zumba; I like to switch it up.

  17. Angela every time I see a picture of you I go running to the gym! I am not vegan but I am conscious of the food that goes inside of my body and I am commit to working out at least 3 days a week, a lot of cardio and weight lifting!!
Black women/ Women of color taking charge of our health and preventing these preventable diseases, I LOVE IT!!

  18. I see Angela rocking every sneaker except Pastry in her workout pics lol. I don’t blame her!

  19. Hi Angela!

I kick box and box as well. I boxed for 5 years as an adolescent and teen, I come from a family of boxers. I also do yoga, Pilates and spinning. I can be bottom heavy so I have to do a multitude of things to keep my bottom area as slim as possible. I try to walk or jog the stairs (when I’m home) after dinner every nite and I don’t eat after 7 ever.

@FA OMG ME TOO! I eat veggies all week, then on the weekend I have meat or seafood. It truly has worked for me!

Angela thank you soooo much for sharing! Your body is amazing.

  20. I am pescetarian, been for the last 4 years. I use to be a trainer so I worked out pretty much everyday up until I went corporate. I rub in the am before work hen in the evenings I jump rope/skip and do some lunges and core exercises. I have been doing it to just stay sane and to lower stress levels.

  21. I was a vegan for 2 years then my friends and fam kept telling me that I was getting too thin and lost my thickness in the right area :( so I started eating meat again.

  22. Loved this post! I’ve been thinking about kickboxing, this is motivated me. Thanks FB and Angie!

  23. You look great Angela! Didn’t know your body was ripped like that :-) As for me, I’ve recently gotten back on track with my fitness after spending the past 3 yrs stuffing my face. I recently lost 25 of the 50 lbs gained via diet only and realized I needed to kick it up a notch to not only drop these last 25 but also tone up. I’m not a vegetarian. Love my meat too much but trying to eat healthier. I don’t do much fast food, fried foods, carbs, etc…but that da** chocolate is my weakness. I currently work out on average 3 days a week. Trying to get it up to at least 5. I absolutely love spinning, running and kettlebell. Currently training for a tri in 2013 but must work on improving my breathing while swimming. My goal is to start incorporating more weights into my routine. If I drop these last 25 lbs, tone up, get your abs and Claire’s calves (very close to getting the latter thanks to running), I will be one bad bish! Great post! Love your new feature!

  24. gym time!!!!!!!!! i was thinkin’ about goin’ veggie…again. but then again, you have to have lots of $ to eat REALLY healthy. so, i’ll stick to cuttin’ out red meat for now….and maybe chicken.

  25. I NEED HELP guys, Im a struggling wanna b. my biggest problem is that i dont eat, i choose good foods when i do but i dont have a good eating habit. I go w/o some days and this is my biggest failure. But Angie Im glad you shared this with us. xoxox

  26. Hey Angela, First of all can I just say wow your body is amazing. Well done on that very inspirational. I was unfortunately born with a body that has a tendency to gain weight easily( I’m all breast and hips). I’ve been going to the gym since I was 15. I’m now 20.
Anyway at the gym I do a combination of the treadmill, the elliptical, other cardio exercises along with weight training. Also i go to a salsa aerobics class which is quite amazing. And I totally agree with you about kickboxing. I did it back at school and it really does tone your body all over. It’s too bad my current gym doesn’t offer it. Can you recommend the stomach exercises you do to make it so toned? I’m not a big fan of sit ups.

  27. Wow your body is amazing. You are def my motivation i really need to look like you lol. I have no will power omg.

  28. I have to say I was born vegetarian lol , I ate chicken but only the skin from KFC up to age 5, i am 27 now . I don’t even hold raw meat, I eat tuna and salt fish nothing else fish wise, I live in the Caribbean, and it is very hard because there are not many vegetarian options, I hardly ever work out if I do yoga and cardio .

  29. I naturally look like a boy so when they start a diet to give you hips and a booty I will try that out.

  30. There’s a WORK OUT tag on this blog?!? Whoa, more of this please. Lovers of fashion want to look good in their gear. Love the “Stylish Gym Outfits” and “Claire’s Life: My Workout Routine”

Angela, I’m a decade-long vegan and recently transitioned from endurance running to sprints and weight resistance training (dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells –> WOOT!)

  31. Hello Angela, I loved reading about your nutrition and workout plan and I am a pescetarian and workout in the gym. I would love to incorporate more cardio in my workout regimen and I think boxing is great for cardio and toning up. Keep up the great work and you look beautiful.

  32. You look great! Would love some tips on becoming vegetarian or pescetarian like good recipes or tips or anything. I want to become healthier and need to get motivated to exercise and eat right. Seeing all these posts are encouraging and love this article. Look forward to seeing more!

  33. Never thought about becoming a vegetarian but I appreciate the information that you are sharing! I plan on taking up boxing myself, just trying to find the “right” instructor.

    You look great!

  34. Awsome topic! I am having a hard time staying motivated to work out.
I have started with improving my diet and being conscious about what I eat. Subscribing to Kimberly Snyder the nutrionist web site has really help me to understand why myeating habits are so important.

    Thanks for the motivation!

  35. @Bella

Ever thought of smoothies? They are a great replacement for meals if you find you don’t eat enough throughout the day…some almond or coconut milk, mango (frozen if you wish), a banana and even some ginger…very yummy. Or if you are looking for a boost of magnesium/iron/calcium try one with kale, green apple, spinach and almond milk.

  36. Hey Ang, looking good. I’m vegetarian along with my hubby for 2 years now. I run 3-5 miles 5 times a week. I also do weight training in high speed intervals 3 days a week focusing on a different muscle group each day. When I get bored with running I switch to yoga, but only the Bikram. I have been dying to add swimming to my regimen…soon.

  37. YES I LOVE THIS TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sorry but health in fitness should be regular post on this site. Your body is your temple, if we use this site to learn how to “adorn our temple”, we should be reading regulaly on high to take care of them too.

  38. What is the big deal?? Her body looks great, but she has no excuse. She is rich!! And she has the time. If she didn’t look like that then I would be giving the side-eye. Show me a woman like that who has a 9-5 job and/or a child, then it would be a big deal. She can shop at whole foods everyday and pay a chef to cook her meal, I bet she does have a six-pack. She is inspiring, but please don’t compare your situation to hers.

  39. Hey

Yeah i actually became a vegetarian for lent earlier this year and then after that decided to actually stick to it sadly after losing weight for the summer I have put it back on and need to lose it quickly as I will be in Singapore from January. Angela Simmons is my actual insperation to have the same body as her would be like great…
