If you’re looking for a minimalist brand that believes in doing things on a small scale, you probably shouldn’t be checking for Opening Ceremony. Bigger is better and more is best when it comes to the OC DNA and not one inkling of that mindset was eschewed for the Resort 2015 collection. For starters, the brand brought the runway to the street by literally having their models glide down Howard Street in the season’s assortment from their office to their store where the presentation was staged. The actual ready-to-wear had the quintessential Opening Ceremony whimsy and functionality with an unexpected splash of delicacy and softness.
Prints were tropical and plentiful including choppy paint patterns for that signature OC edge, stripes for a hint at the classics, warm weather destination-ready palm fronds, and anemones wherever possible for a deeper dive into flora.
Carol Lim and Humberto Leon aimed to put a high-fashion spin on denim and they did that successfully with the everyday texture reimagined with chiffon pleated hems on mini skirts, rolled and crushed in the form of clutches, juxtaposed against black leather on ankle wrap sandals, and pocketed at the knees on skinny jeans. These pieces will undoubtedly be among the brand’s retail hits for the season.
At times, the collection felt downright refined with roomy palm frond print coats with bracelet sleeves, soft pleated skirts, textured bermuda shorts, and dreamy pastels.
The ultimate, in your face fashionista who normally loads up on OC wares each season will be more than satisfied here, though an entirely new set of women with less fussy penchants in the style department will also find a design or two to add to their wardrobes. If this is any indication, the brand will surely ramp up their efforts for their Spring 2015 runway show which should truly be a sight to behold.
