The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Pharrell Wears Headdress for Elle UK, Linda Evangelista Appears in Moschino Fall 2014 Ad Campaign, and Did Karl Lagerfeld Knock Off New Balance?

• In addition to their Keira Knightley cover, Elle UK has released a limited-edition special order Pharrell Williams cover for June 2014. While the magazine will undoubtedly catch flack for putting Pharrell in a Native American headdress, the singer looks darn good. Do you think this is yet another case of culture appropriation? • In case you were wondering what else you could stuff your drawers with from Anna Wintour’s favorite Proenza Schouler, today the brand announced swimwear. At their resort show Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough announced that they had designed 20 styles of swim suits in collaboration with Swimwear Anywhere. Expect prints galore as that’s what the boys are known for. (Elle)
• Linda Evangelista + Steven Meisel + McDonalds = Moschino ad campaign? It seems that’s the recipe that Jeremy Scott settled on for his first offering from the brand. Done up in a bit of old world glamour, messy hair and black and white portrait included, Linda smizes in a skirt set bringing a bit of prim and proper to the kitchy collection. We’ve got to say, we didn’t quite expect this one.(Fashion Bomb Inbox)

New Balance, Left. Karl Lagerfeld, Right.

• New Balance has a bone to pick with Karl Lagerfeld.  Apparently according to New Balance (and we’re inclined to agree with them) besides the letter logo, Lagerfeld’s new $360 sneaker is the same sneaker they have been designing since 1970, which they currently sell for $112. Do you think NB has a case? (Lucky)

• Jean Paul Gaultier has lent his design talents to amfAR.  A nautical striped bag he has designed, modeled by Heidi Klum in the campaign, will be sold at Bloomingdales with profits going to help raise awareness and find a cure for HIV/AIDS. Available for $30 the bag looks like the perfect summer tote! (Fashion Gone Rogue)

Yes I agree.. Karl Lagerfeld for all his snout should not have made this boo boo. I do like his better though; it’s like an updated New Balance.

  2. Relle says:

Honestly, I respect Karl Lagerfeld as a fashion icon. But there’s is no way I’m paying $360 for a knock off sneaker. That’s exactly what it is, a knock off. NB has a case against him, unfortunately.

  3. Enigma says:

I love the Elle UK cover! But yes the magazine and Pharrel will catch a whole bunch of flack for the headpiece, unless he can prove he have Indian in him…

  4. AH says:

The headdress wasn’t needed. Would you wear the badge of World War II veteran? NO! Would you wear blackface? NO! Why? Because it’s offensive.
Native Americans suffered greatly at the hands of white settlers who took their land, raped their women, killed their children and spread foreign diseases. And they continue to suffer to this day. Let’s not make it worse by wearing their religious symbols as fashion accessories on white magazine covers. Have some decency and common sense.

  5. Natasha says:

Tsk tsk, Pharrell. None of the headlines even indicate a relevant reference for why the piece is needed. C’mon, darlin.

  6. Angel says:

aside from it being offensive, what is it’s relevancy?

  7. iloveshoes says:

That headdress is beyond offensive and Pharrel being a black man, no matter how he tries to divvy his blackness up, should know better. So many persons that I believe to be black were commenting on other blogs “what’s the big deal?”. It just showed how lackluster their education was/is besides the basic American history textbook they’ve been brainwashed with. The one that lies and leaves out so much of the brutality by the hand of the monstrous Europeans who “discovered” America. Shame.

Funny but no one corrects white people or Asian or native Americans for misappropriating tribal symbols and selling them on T-shirts… Guess it only matters if the people you defend and grant reparations to don’t come from an African continent.

I’m inclined to agree. I don’t agree with what Pharell did, but its very disturbing to see blacks defending native americans as if they’re these innocent people when they were actually slave masters, but in the same token are fully accepting of people like Iggy and Macklemore who appropriate black american culture far worse than this. We are so backwards and will remain at the bottom. *Culture appropriation IS WRONG* no matter who does it!

  10. Georgia says:

It’s hardly the case that no one calls out white, Asian, or native people for misappropriating tribal symbols–Urban Outfitters stays in constant trouble over it. It’s a beautiful portrait of Pharell, but a shame he chose this appropriation.

Huh? Where you been at? White folks who put this sh-t on get called out about it with the quickness.

No one is saying Native Americans are “innocent”. What race or ethnicity in this world is as a mass group? But do you not understand what ‘genocide’ means? People can be pro-black without being anti-everyone else.

  12. Anonymous says:

Please have the people you praise on the runway that are exploiting the symbols of our nations are as white as can be and all of you are just in the cut nodding like nothing is wrong. Leave Pharrell alone and stop trying to shove the genocide of native America down out throats when the genocide happening to my people is current and we, unlike them, have received no apology or reparations for these travesties.
