Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.

They say they still can’t see.

    Ms.Angelo was true inspiration towards my own confidence as a woman, as a human being. I admired the vocabulary she used and they way she used them. I will continue to listen/read about her stories, poems, writings, interviews, conversations, etc. for the rest my life, surly. She willbe missed.

    Ms. Maya Angelo was my idol! Her words comfort me, empower me, makes me smile , growing up without a mother or strong women around me, I had to look elsewhere to find strength. Ms. Angelo will surely be missed.

    It’s my selfishness that mourns her death. She has had 80 something years in the world and has lived every bit of it…..but man…knowing someone like her, who thought as she did, who did what she did, who commanded the respect that she did leaves me saddened ..wondering who could ever compete. …wondering if others are behind her. For me she is a canon of Black culture….and man it so hard to say goodbye to such greatness.
