The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: The Kimye Vogue Cover Was Grace Coddington’s Idea, Bethann Hardison Sits Down With Document Journal, and Teyana Taylor is Releasing A Line of Extensions

• There has been a lot said about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s now-infamous Vogue cover, but Vogue editor Grace Coddington has the last, if not most important word on the shoot—because it was all her idea. The editrix sat down with the Financial Times‘s Vanessa Freidman (who is leaving to become a fashion critic at the New York Times) for an interview, in which she reveals how the cover came to be. “There was a wedding story to be done,” she told FT. “And Anna probably had them in mind, because she had been seeing a lot of Kanye, so she said, ‘Maybe we should shoot it on lookalikes.’ And I thought, ‘Why not just do it on the real thing? This is Vogue.’ And I do think Kim Kardashian represents this moment in our culture. I’m fascinated by her, in the same way I’m fascinated by the people I see on the street or the subway.” (FT)

• Watch Naomi Campbell and Franca Sozzani at this year’s Vogue festival with British editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman. The pair discussed their careers, and of course, the issue of diversity in the industry. Campbell brought along a copy of British Vogue‘s March issue, to illustrate how far she thinks the industry has come with including models of color in campaigns. She flipped through, pointing out a few of the brown models featured in the ads. “This shows that this has changed. There is a change for the positive, and going in the right direction.” Glad to hear the queen is pleased! We still have far to go, but if anyone would know when she saw an improvement in diversity, it would be Campbell, who has been working in the industry for over 28 years. (Vogue UK)

cara delevingne

Cara Delevingne‘s scored another acting role. The buzzy model’s been cast for a small part in the upcoming Pan movie, where she will star alongside Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Rooney Mara, and more. She’s also been cast in Tulip Fever, which will be directed by Justin Chadwick. (Deadline Hollywood)

Bethann-Hardison

• Liya Kebede interviewed Bethann Hardison for Document Journal to chat about her career, her work with the Diversity Coalition, and of course, what’s next for the famed fashion activist. Hardison discusses the challenges she’s faced in trying to bring more color to the runways and fashion magazines, even with those industry professionals who consider themselves liberals. People think they’re so liberal. But liberalism can be borderline racist! It can be very subtle: sway and sway and you’re not standing straight anymore,” she said. “And so I thought to myself: this will help the industry, because the industry is flatlining. We got people talking about the issue. I loved seeing everybody truly step up to say: okay, we’re gonna help, we’re gonna co-sponsor things and put a panel discussion together on diversity and have the industry come in at a breakfast like they did with the ELLE initiative. And never in the history of our industry have brown girls had such success at being booked into fashion advertising as they do now!” Of course, there is so much more work to be done, but Hardison is an industry vet, so she’s seen the improvements in real time. Here’s to seeing more people of all races and nationalities on the runway! (Document Journal)

Teyana-Taylor-Taylor'd-Textures

Teyana Taylor‘s about to make some bank on her trademark curls. The rapper has teamed up with My Extensionz LLC for a line of extensions inspired by her impressive coif. The aptly named Taylor’d (heh) by My Extensionz is a combination of Brazilian and Peruvian virgin hair, and will drop tomorrow, April 26th. Think you’ll try out her new line? (Fashion Bomb Inbox)
