Fausto Puglisi is big on excitement: from his inspirations to the way he translates them into the punch of his ready-to-wear. The fervor was definitely on high with his Fall 2014 collection in which colors were bold and silhouettes were edgy and sultry, sometimes simultaneously. His influences were plentiful including Orphism art movement co-founder Sonia Delaunay, Les Ballets Russes, and the Statue of Liberty — the latter who made an appearance on silk blouses and sweatshirts.
Colorblocking and embellishment burst through the collection in its first look, showcasing as much leg as possible. The high-fashion contrasts continued with edgy sweatshirts paired with knee-length pleated skirts and harlequin prints giving rise to studded ankle boots. Some ensembles were the epitome of elegance with clean silhouettes and minimal pattern play, while others were more daring with leggings anchoring ensembles as pants. The choices were awe-inspiring: showcasing complete finesse at certain moments and erring on the side of disharmony at others.
Tailoring and craftsmanship were consistent and expert throughout the collection’s motley crew of patterns. Pleats were precise and shoulders were perfectly round. Leather accents drove home the Fall-perfect texture story.
I’m a world traveler, but always proud to be an American, thus I couldn’t help but fall in love with Puglisi’s many odes to Lady Liberty. She was artfully sprawled on leather-inset tees, roomy toppers, the sleeves of a colorblock wool jacket, and in mini vignettes on a silk button-front blouse. The grand old US of A is all about inclusion after all, thus it was exhilarating to see the brand give an Italian spin on the timeless motif.
So what will the globe’s “It” girls be wearing on the red carpet from among these designs? The collection’s colorblocked leg-baring dresses, an embellished-sleeve leather biker jacket, and bell-shaped mini skirts will definitely make a red carpet impact. I expect to see Katy Perry in these pieces in the coming months as they’re a great fit for her punchy personality and love of bold fashion.
