The Big Apple is a constant source of inspiration for Donna Karan’s DKNY label and she certainly channeled it for the brand’s Fall 2014 collection, casting real-life New Yorkers on the runway including “It” girl Hannah Bronfman and rapper Angel Haze. The “model” selection was just as youthful and urban as the designs ranging from wearable parka jackets to battle the city’s inclement weather to pieces of a dressier persuasion that spoke to NYC’s nightlife.
Functionality was effortlessly blended with quirk from the onset with fur-collar quilted nylon coats paired with tinsel fringe numbers, puffers boasting shaggy fur sleeves, and metallic insets giving a shiny rise to utilitarian designs. Leather ankle boots, Yankee fitted caps, and high-top platform sneakers served as accoutrements.
Menswear suiting spoke to the city’s businessmen and women with pleated trousers cutting just at the ankle in dark tones including grey and black.
I’m a huge fan of all things varsity and varying sizes of the brand’s “D” insignia were sprawled against tinsel-fringed sleeve turtlenecks, simple knits, and long line leather sleeve varsity jackets.
DKNY has sold itself from its inception on its trademark logo and that was in full force on functional short-sleeve t-shirts and striped turtlenecks.
Prints were plentiful with a distressed black and white houndstooth pattern playing centerstage on practical coats, button-front tunics, and a silky jumpsuit with lace detailing. Animal print was also a focal point on cozy outerwear, long skirts, infinity scarves (definitely stocking up on these come Fall), and sweater dresses. Sneakers were crafted from both prints for truly statement-making footwear.
There was no denying fur here with the cozy texture turning heads in a striped pattern on long, oversized vests and roomy shawl collar coats. The furriness continued on a bubblegum pink confection and neck-warming scarves.
I can’t wait to see how Rita Ora, Rihanna, and Zendaya Coleman wear the collection’s flirtier looks in the coming months. A fur-hem mini dress will look killer on Ms. Ora with red lips, while a pink lace number will be just the thing for Zendaya’s next appearance.
What do you think of the latest from DKNY?
