Show Review: Alexander Wang Fall 2014
By Faith

Alexander Wang staged his biggest runway production ever for Fall 2014, solidifying himself among the fashion greats. He led the industry to Duggal Greenhouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard: a veritable event for many editors and buyers who rarely travel to the borough. Some were horrified, but only until the clothing and accessories hit the runway. If you’re going to make the fashionable masses troop by water taxi, car, and train, then the least you could do would be to put on a good show right?

Well, the show was definitely good: high in technical difficulty that pushed forward the brand and fashion in general. Wang was inspired by extreme weather conditions and the idea of surviving them: something all New Yorkers can identify with given this Winter’s polar vortex. Outdoor sports and urbanity were cited among his influences, which were particularly relevant given the 2014 Olympics happening in Sochi right now. This all gave way to Wang’s signature sporty silhouettes from utility pockets on shift dresses, rompers, and coats (the better to hold your moleskine, mobile, lipstick, or lighter in) to bermuda shorts offset by functional fanny packs (don’t deny it: you’ll be wearing one came Fall).

Prints included classic polka dots, colorful landscape patterns, and intricately woven floral vines in turquoise, hot pink, and neon green and yellow. The motifs made quite the statement on voluminous anoraks, zip-front duffel coats, and the aforementioned shorts.

Let’s talk about the accessories for a moment shall we? It seems Alexander Wang doesn’t make a shoe or bag editors won’t lust after and he did not disappoint here. Over-the-knee two-tone leather boots acted as shields for the models’ often bare legs, while shoulder bags boasted the same utility pockets as the dresses for maximum storage. Some were even crafted in exotic skins for added doses of luxury. Killer mule-inspired boots closed out the collection.

Knits packed a punch with colorblock turtlenecks and zip-front sweater dresses. The styles were particularly poignant when accompanied by etched leather mini skirts and shearling bomber jackets.

A slew of splurge-worthy coats have already been presented this season, but Wang made the case for his and his alone. Mesh-detailed shearling pieces could go down in your wardrobe as classics, while fur-collar suede double-breasted jackets were among the head turners, considering their hems were asymmetrical as if they’d been torn at by a wild animal or two: clearly the Wang women are survivors through and through.

The collection wasn’t heavy in red carpet-ready attire, but the brands fans including Zoe Kravitz, Khloe Kardashian, and Mollie King will have a few looks to choose from. The turtleneck-pencil skirt pairings crafted with heat-activated leather detailing will make for head turners, while the slouchy drawstring pants will look fierce for those with toned midriffs with long-sleeve crop tops and pointed-toe pumps.

I can see Rita Ora, or even Ciara wearing some of these pieces. I’d be interested to see their spin on it. As far as Wang’s collection I do like the boots. Very interesting POV.
