The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: New York City is The World’s Global Fashion Capital, Topshop Opening Fifth Avenue Location, and Michael Kors is A Billionaire
By The Fashion Bomb Staff

• The title for Global Fashion Capital has returned to its rightful owner, with New York City taking back the accolade after London’s two-year stint as the industry’s most fashionable city. Paris almost took the prize, and was only .5 percent away from a tie with NYC. Rounding out the top five is Los Angeles and Barcelona. (Global Language Monitor)

• Soon New Yorkers won’t have to trek all the way to SoHo to get their hands on Topshop‘s trendy high-street wares. The British retailer has announced plans to open up a new, 40,000 square foot store on Fifth Avenue and 49th street. There will be a Topman department in the new location, as well as new stores cropping up in D.C., Houston, Atlanta, and San Deigo, all of which (save for D.C.) will have Topman sections. This expansion is all part and parcel of owner Sir Phillip Green‘s plan to make strides in the American market. There might even be a Topshop collaboration with an American designer coming int he future.  “Who knows,” Green said. “I wouldn’t rule out stocking a collection by a young American designer.” In the meantime, Topshop fans can look forward to the return of the store’s famed Kate Moss collaboration, which will drop in stores and online May 1st. • Taylor Tomasi Hill‘s snagged herself a new gig! The fashionable red head is now a contributing editor for Gwyneth Paltrow‘s GOOP website, for which she will be covering New York Fashion Week. (WWD)

Balenciaga Spring 2013 RTW

• Balenciaga v. Nicolas Ghesquière will definitely be a court case the fashion world will closely follow, and fortunately, we will have time to do so as the court date, set for July 1st, falls between the Paris Men’s shows and Couture week. To refresh your memories, Balenciaga filed suit against Ghesquière for an interview he gave to System magazine in which he says that he “began to feel as though [he] was being sucked dry, like they wanted to steal [his] identity while trying to homogenise things.” Balenciaga wants $9.4 million in damages for Ghesquière’s criticisms. (WWD)

• Michael Kors is now worth a billion dollars, according to Bloomberg. Since going public in 2011, the designer’s label is worth $81.91 per share. Well, werq! (Bloomberg)
