• During last night’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful broadcast on NBC, Tyra Banks delivered a speech thanking the publication for twice putting her, a black woman, on the cover all those years ago when no one else was “daring” enough to do so. “A lot of the women here say it was their dream. But it wasn’t my dream, because I didn’t think it was possible,” she said. “And I didn’t think it was possible because of the color of my skin….I want to thank Sports Illustrated…for thinking different, and I say “different” without an “ly,” for being daring and for making every little black girl that year that saw that issue go “oh my God, mama, I think I’m pretty because a black girl’s on the cover just like me.” I stand here representing everybody with a dream, to know that if you have a dream and you have tunnel vision, it can come true. But remember to dream bigger. Because if you do, those things can be reached, too.” I must admit, as a little girl, Tyra’s solo cover did have that effect on me… I was definitely excited to see someone who looked like me being represented as beautiful, desirable, and glamorous. But the covers since have been pretty whitewashed… it would be nice to see another brown girl on the cover in the future! Perhaps Jasmine Tookes might fit the bill? (Jezebel)

• It sounds like Bethann Hardison and the Diversity Coalition are pleased with the strides made this past year with regards to runway diversity. Hardison has already written to CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg and CEO Steven Kolb to offer her congratulations on the progress, with the reminder that the industry needs to keep it up: “The objective is to continue this improvement across the entire industry. We look for consistency and not because of advocacy or a season lending to darker skin. We will continue to watch and reveal season to season.” She also puts responsibility on casting directors, who often don’t give designers much variety when it comes to the models: “It is important to say that there are design houses serviced by casting directors and stylists who are latent, as they seem comfortable with stereotypical images.” (WWD)
Katie Eary River Island

Katie Eary‘s teamed with River Island for a capsule collection due to hit stores February 18th. The range, inspired by Hunter S. Thompson‘s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, certainly lives up to its trippy muse. Leopard and reptile prints are rendered in acid-bright hues of pink, green, blue, and red. The collection is heavy on swimwear, with plenty of cool one and two-piece options, as well as some maxi dresses and skirts that could also work as cover-ups. Check out the collection at Vogue UK. Taylor Swift Glamour March 2014

• Glamour magazine is the latest Condé Nast title to get a makeover… just in time for its 75th anniversary. The glossy’s March issue unveils all new features, like “Step Into My Office,”  focusing on successful business women, as well as a monthly feature on designers. Taylor Swift has been tapped as the cover girl, in spite of the fact that she normally doesn’t do that well on newsstands. Still, editor-in-chief Cindi Leive seems excited about this new issue, and optimistic about her work with Condé Nast artistic director Anna Wintour in efforts to revamp the mag. “In terms of Glamour, it’s been like a great, really positive collaboration and, you know, obviously I avail myself of her counsel on things like photography and fashion because how lucky are we to have an artistic director who happens to know more about fashion than anyone in the universe?” Leive said. “She understands the brand DNA of Glamour. She’s got vast experience and incredible wisdom about fashion photography.” (WWD)

Zac Posen David's Bridal

Zac Posen‘s line for David’s Bridal is hitting stores February 6th, and now you can view all the gorgeous dresses in the seven-piece range. The collection is quintessential Posen: ultra feminine silhouettes with bursting fishtail hemlines, and corseting galore. Makes you wish you were getting married! Peep all the dresses at Vogue UK.
