Giambattista Valli said he had a young, party girl from the city in mind when he was designing his couture offerings for Spring 2014. When you think about it, sure, that could make sense. Who else might such short skirts be better suited for? But, for me, the inspiration stopped and started at the abbreviated hemlines.
Instead, this collection gave me more of an updated old-world lady at court feel than anything else. Valli went with heavy fabrics (jacquard and luxurious silks) and embellishment galore, often in the form of colorful, blooming vines creeping up the bodices of several pieces.
Peplum and bow flourishes were as voluminous as ever, with Valli anchoring draped swaths around the hips.
Yes, this is another gorgeous showing from Valli, although I think the heavy fabrics take away from the youthful feel he says he was trying to achieve, skewing a wee bit older. The short skirts and some of the color combinations really saved him on that front.
Still, imagine how fantastic Lupita Nyong’o might look in that bead-embellished leaf print dress….
