Turkish designer Umit Benan makes a strong impact for his first showing in Paris, sending Jackie Robinson-inspired looks down the runway on an entirely black cast of male models. The designs harked back to the 40′s, showing that old-school expert tailoring will always be relevant.
Suiting in Fall-perfect textures including suede and tweed are given an Americana spin with fedoras, striped ties, and solid knit turtlenecks underneath.
Bomber jackets and sportcoats are emblazoned with the varsity letter “B”: perhaps standing for either Benan or baseball, the sport Mr. Robinson played so well. There’s no denying the functionality of these pieces: sure to please a modern-day dandy or two.
Quilted detailing adds to the sports-inspired feeling of the collection on the sleeves of jackets, head-to-toe plaid getups, and trousers.
Winter white has reared its head this autumn and Benan intends for it to stick around for Fall 2014. The hues gives a crisp feeling to three-piece suits, cozy toggle coats with plaid sleeves, and functional sweaters, shirts, and trousers. Camel also has a moment on a duffel coat that is sure to keep its wearer warm for the season.
I can definitely see stylish men including Andre 3000, Pharrell Williams, and the guys of Street Etiquette in pieces from this collection. The clothes are so cool that they can even work for women like myself who love an oversized jacket and sweater.
