Lupita Nyong'o Vanity Fair

Lupita Nyong’o fanboys and girls were excited to hear the beloved awards season it-girl was going to grace the pages of Vanity Fair‘s February issue. But their joy quickly faded when the magazine posted an image from the spread in which Nyong’o’s skin looks much lighter than usual. Angry Lupettes took to Twitter to call out the mag for the misstep–one that seems to happen far too often with black and brown actresses. I wager Vanity Fair might blame the lighting for Nyong’o’s fairer appearance, which I can buy–we all sometimes appear lighter if there’s enough exposure. But part of what makes Lupita so stunning is her beautiful, deep tone. It’s what makes her outfits pop. I would think the mag might want to showcase this unique beauty. There’s no way to know for sure if the lightening was intentional, but the pictures could have been better had Vanity Fair  taken a cue from Dazed and ConfusedWhat do you think? Is Lupita’s complexion the result of bright lighting? Or is something more shady afoot? (The Gloss)

Kim Kardashian North West Ellen

Kim Kardashian showed off more photos of her adorable 7-month-old daughter North West today on the Ellen show, and yes, they just might be too cute. I simply can’t handle Nori! (E!)

• Milliner Eugenia Kim is expanding her brand to include footwear, which is due to debut for the Fall 2014 season. She first tried her hand at shoes back in 2003, but the collection was so popular, her factory could not accommodate the demand for product. After ditching the line in 2005, the designer is reviving it with a dark, ’70s-inspired range crafted from such luxury materials like ostrich and mink. The new collection will bow at New York Fashion week, but Fashionista‘s got a few sketches of the forthcoming line, whose prices will range from $535 to $1,095. (Fashionista)

rihanna mac viva glam

Rihanna gives a few deets about her forthcoming M.A.C. Cosmetics Viva Glam shade, which will arrive in stores January 21st. Proceeds will go to the M.A.C. AIDS fund, for which the ‘Pour it Up’ singer is extremely passionate:  “My contribution is that every penny from the cost of this lipstick and Lipglass goes to help someone who really needs it,” she told Teen Vogue. “I am doing this especially for young girls.” Rih connects with the cause on a personal level. I’ve been around so many people who have been affected by HIV and AIDS. It’s my turn to spread awareness. Because when people don’t talk about this, they feel like it’s not happening,” adding, “Nobody is safe unless you protect yourself.” (Teen Vogue)

• She certainly doesn’t look it, but today, our fair First Lady Michelle Obama turns 50! The Harvard-educated lawyer, mom of two, all-round flawless queen, and card-carrying member of the Beyhive will celebrate tomorrow night with a dance party at the White House, for which guests have been told to wear comfortable shoes. “There’s one thing I can tell you for sure … people will move,” Valerie Jarrett, senior White House advisor dished. Ooohwee, sounds like it’s going to be TURNT in there… or, as turnt as a party at the White House can get. (Grazia)

Miley Cyrus in Roberto Cavalli @ The Bangerz World Tour 2

Roberto Cavalli will outfit Miley Cyrus in a series of looks for her Bangerz world tour. The costume sketches have hit the ‘net, and there is a lot of denim, a lot of sparkle, and of course, a generous helping of bare skin. Standouts include a flesh-toned stud-and-crystal-encrusted bodysuit, and a studded, embroidered denim bra-and hotpants combo. (Fashion Bomb Inbox)

  1. Kanyi says:

Happy Birthday Michelle…..Lupita’s skin might not necessarily be lightened, i think it’s from the camera.

  2. For those how are know how film works. Anytime you have a white set it acts as a bounce board. Whether your white or black you are always going to appear “lighter”. Add the white balloons its a complete soft box!At the end of the day we all know Lupita is a beautiful Dark Skinned woman, and that is why she is the fashion darling of the year. Let it go people. She’s the next Alek Wek and she’s beautiful!

  3. Onyx says:

I do think her skin was lightened. Vanity fair could’ve shot the image in natural light then retouched the surrounding areas to appear brighter. They can achieve the desired bright white look and preserve the beauty of her natural tones. If it was Gwyneth Paltrow, the image would be useless since little differentiation can be made between her figure and the background. That photo is incredibly bright. Too bright to preserve any skin tone.

  4. BougieHippie says:

Black people protest about the most moronic things. Anyone whomever took a picture in their life would know anyone appears light when surrounded by white!

  5. entrefashionista says:

No story here people! It’s obvious the shoot was just not lit properly. I don’t think it was intentional skin lightening. She’s obviously still has her chocolatey smoothness even with the ill executed set. On another note, I’m not quite sure that Miley has the bod to pull some of those looks off. Not sure if it’s going to be as flattering on her as in the sketches.

  6. Biyonsay says:

    Clearly its LIGHTING!!
My gosh, these skin lightening claims and what not are just pathetic.

  7. Anonymous says:

Oh for goodness sake, Lupita is well known and admired for her beautiful, deep toned skin. She’s graced many high fashion shoots where her darker skin has been embraced. Given this, why then do people think would Vanity Fair deliberately lighten her skin? *yawn*

  8. Anonymous says:

I love the black model and the shoot with balloons in contrast :-)
The louis vuitton outfit i don’t like hahaha

  9. Deedee says:

Sometimes people just sound stupid…of course it was the lighting and background that made her appear lighter…BUT it was the magazine’s choice to have this combo so that her skin would appear lighter. It was not an accident…Vanity fair does not make mistakes or have after thoughts. An no its not ok to just say “it no big deal” they do this sh&$ time and time again intentionally. The discussion is not did they do this on purpose but why do they do this and think its ok? Black women are in love with lupita ( aside from her talent, intelligence, and charm) because she is unapologetically 100% black beauty and she is owning and forcing everyone else to…now these bastards turn it around and say she beautiful…but just not so dark. Don’t get blinded by subliminal bs folks…no its not ok and I see you vanity FAIR!

  10. NYC chick says:

The Lupita story is a snooze….let it go FBD.

    Happy Birthday Michell!

    North is too cute!

  11. I don’t think her skin was lightened. I do think it was the bright lights on set, the white background and dress. C’mon people.

  12. Anonymous says:

Deedee you have a valid point!

  13. Liz says:

Lupita’s skin has been darkened in magazines before. so why mention the lighter skin tone and not the darker? she’s so beautiful either way. but fair is fair. why hate on one side and not the other?
