• Many of you were dazzled by Mindy Kaling‘s ELLE‘s Women in TV cover, happy that the magazine had chosen to feature another woman of color for the second time this year. But plenty of people took issue with the fact that out of the three other women who cover the issue: Girls‘s Allison WilliamsParks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler, and The New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel, Mindy is the only one who is honored with a headshot, while the other, slimmer women’s covers boast almost full-body snaps. Others were upset (a sentiment echoed in the comments on here,) that they chose to render Kaling in black and white, when color would have done her gorgeous skin tone justice. You will find no opposition from me. I would have loved to see Kaling’s beautiful brown skin and red undertones (*swoon*) against an emerald green or cyan hue. What do you think? (Daily Mail)

Karen Elson and Liz Goldwyn have teamed with Moda Operandi for their “Vintage Vanguard” collection, tapping several designers to rework vintage pieces from Elson and Goldwyn’s respective closets. The result is a dazzling collection of pieces with that one-of-a-kind feel, crafted by names like Jason Wu, Tabitha Simmons, Eddie Borgo, Marc Jacobs, Rodarte and more. Proceeds from the collection will benefit Dress for Success. Check it all out on Moda Operandi. (Fashion Bomb Inbox)

• Intel, Opening Ceremony‘s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, Barneys, and the CFDA are all working together on a new wearable tech product of which little is known. So far, the only real information we have is that it will be a bracelet sold at Barneys, and the CFDA and Intel will handle the marketing scheme behind it. Any guesses as to what this mystery device is? (The Cut)

• The Superbowl just got more fashion-forward. The CFDA tapped a couple of its designers to put their spin on 48 Super Bowl  XLVIII football helmets, creating couture headpieces to be auctioned off to support the NFL Foundation. The designers went all out putting their marks on their respective helmets– Nicole Miller added a blooming bouquet of flowers to hers, John Varvatos embellished his with silver studs, and Dennis Basso gave his a fur mohawk.  Bloomingdale‘s (who also created their own helmet–a formidable thing with miniature statues of the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty attached to the top) will display the sporty couture pieces in the windows of their 59th street flagship starting January 15th, when they will go up for bidding through February 4th on bloomingdales.com/superbowlhelmets. Bidding starts at $248. (WWD)

ELLE UK has a  look at Opening Ceremony x Adidas‘s fourth collaboration together. This current offering, will be released in two rounds. The baseball collection hist stores this month, with the taekwondo offering to follow in March. (ELLE UK)

  1. candylicker says:

Well Mindy is a bit thick and you Elle only wants rail-thin on the cover, And they put her in black and white on purpose, we all that.

  2. The truth says:

Mindy looks beautiful and I think the closeup is great. I understand why some people are peeved but I think it’s better for Mindy to have this moment without focusing on the negative.

  3. nyc chick says:

People are never satisfied…always have something negative to say when a nontraditional “beauty” is featured on the cover. Its like they’re looking for a fight or complaint. Creative licensce is taken with white models all of the time…and sometimes their covers are shitty. (I saw a horrible cover of Julia Roberts last month and no one said a peep). People want to be up in arms bc Kerry Washington, Mindy, or whomever don’t look like some idealized, angelic vision of brown beauty in our heads on every cover. (Same thing with Melissa McCarthy & full-figured beauty). We need to get over this hypersensitivity!

  4. Kahalia says:

I think Mindy looks gorgeous on this cover. The photograph is flawless. I don’t mind her being in black and white. She is an Indian American woman who writes and produces her own show and is a best selling author to boot. DO it Mindy.

  5. Kahalia says:

PS How much do I love Mindy’s own comment?

“I love my @ELLEmagazine cover,” Kaling wrote Tuesday on Twitter. “It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me.”

  6. LawyerLady says:

I think the cover is stunning. Gorgeous. I like the fact that her cover is unique and different. That’s one of the things that make it so fab.
