Back in February, when Tom Ford sent his first collection in several years to runway, he said he was designing for the likes of Rihanna. It seems he’s kept with that tradition this season, offering the perfect wardrobe for a champagne-swilling badgyal type who has extra spending cash lying around– or, who has enough name recognition to not need said cash to buy actual clothes.
And so, the collection bowed with a series of shapely, textured leather ensembles that draped the body like suits of armor. Croco-embossed leathers mingled with their chevron quilted cousins to bring forth that toughened glamour Ford’s womenswear is known for.
Suited separates were (naturally) expertly executed, but there were enough moto jackets and zipper-festooned pieces to satisfy anyone’s inner rocker chick. Ford also used frayed, patchworked, and woven fabric swaths to create his textural pieces. Standout looks included several structured mock turtle neck minidresses, blinged-out with mirrored fragments fashioned into mosaic formations.
Spiderweb-like lace netting infused even more sex appeal to an already saucy offering.
The leather outfits are my favorite, but I can’t help but want more from this collection. Some of the looks I feel we’ve seen before (the gown Chanel Iman wore to the 2012 Met Gala could easily be part of this offering). Still, the showstoppers are there, and I’m sure we’ll see everyone from Jennifer Lopez to even Marlo Hampton sporting these pieces. Oh, and the shoes? To die.
What do you think?
