Ashish Gupta combined the mundane with glitz and glamour for his Spring 2014 collection, giving denim, polo shirts, and loafers a flashy and fun spin. Inspired by those late nights when the traces of your party looks are melded (not always artfully) with more comfortable attire, the looks were most certainly eclectic: a mixture of diverse and not always congruous elements, true to the brand’s funky and eye-catching aesthetic.
Denim was tattered and adorned in sequins for a captivating, yet grunge take on the style.
Polo dresses, drawstring shorts, simple maxi-length frocks, and sweatpants added on to that everyday vibe, though the same sheen and shimmer remained, uplifting the pared-down pieces. Larger-than-life tribal-inspired jewelry were unusual, yet incredibly striking complements: it’s clear Gupta was aiming for high contrast.
The Coca-Cola emblem popped up everywhere from graphic tees to sheer thobe-inspired caftans. Gupta’s aforementioned party girl will clearly be picking up the addictive, yet refreshing beverage when running out to the store the morning after in her offbeat getup. The graphic also spoke to the global aspect of the brand: the logo is translated into every language known to man and is loved all around the world. What more universal way could you use to unify the sartorially-savvy, no matter what continent they live on?
The graphics continued: most notably in Arabic with the words for “happiness” and “love”, as well as “Best Wishes” strewn across tie-neck pinstripe blouses and sweatpants.
Rita Ora and Nicki Minaj have opted for the brand’s wares onstage and at awards shows and either starlet might opts for the collection’s limited, yet glittering red carpet-appropriate styles. A metallic ombré stripe cowlneck halter gown with impossible-to-miss sequins would look great with dewy makeup and metallic pumps, while a long white mesh number will satisfy the tomboy chic desires of a number of Hollywood’s most stylish.
