The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: John Galliano to Permanently Join Oscar de la Renta?, A Look at The Banana Republic x Issa London Collection, and Nina Garcia to Cover NYFW With Google Glass

john-galliano

• John Galliano might be poised to keep a longer tenure at Oscar de la Renta. The designer had a three-week residence at the label this year, helping de la Renta with his Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Now, WWD is reporting rumors that Galliano might be looking into a more permanent position at the house. De la Renta’s people seem to be on board, with the brand’s CEO Alex Bolen saying, “…We are deeply impressed with John’s talent and would love to find a way to work with him in the future. To date, we have not found that way.” Galliano’s publicist Liz Rosenberg declined to comment. John has had quite a rough two years, but I think he’d bring a wonderful point of view to ODLR! Only time will tell if the label will permanently bring him into the fold. (WWD)

e-bay

• The government is thumbing through your phone records, Google and Facebook know everything you’ve ever done on the internet, and now EBay wants to get in on the fun. The mega e-tailer is rolling out a new app, the Retail Associate Platform, in which shopgirls and guys can build individual profiles on specific customers. The technology would allow retailers to keep a file of your information; from your purchase activity to your birthdate, and use it to figure out how best to sell their stuff to you. The app will allow retailers to suggest items you might be interested in buying, and help better manage their employees: the program will have an associate training aspect, as well as a tool to keep track of store performance. The benefits of such invasive data hoarding to shoppers? “Endless Aisles–” access to all the brand’s products at once. Small sacrifices!  (WWD)

banana-republic-issa-london

• Banana Republic‘s collaboration with Issa London hits stores tomorrow, so if you were planning on scooping anything up, you might want to get a jumpstart! A few of the range’s pieces are inspired by looks from Issa’s main line famously sported by Kate Middleton. A replica of the iconic blue wrap dress the Duchess wore to announce her engagement to Prince William is included in the collection for $130, much less than the original, which was priced at $575. Check out the full lookbook at Fashionista. (Fashionista)

simon-doonan

• Simon Doonan‘s blessing the world with a fifth literary effort, The Asylum: A Collage of Couture Reminiscences…and Hysteria, in which he chronicles some of the best moments and personalities he’s come across in his long career in fashion. The book includes musings of industry figures, like Suzy Menkes, whom he calls  “one of the great, glamorous eccentrics of fashion,” and Anna Wintour“a magnificent phenomenon.” Doonan also lends some thoughts on John Galliano, for whom he expressed tremendous support: “I feel tremendous solidarity with John, who I regard as a true poetic soul,” he writes. “I also lived in Battersea, so I understand his early struggles. As a sober gay man, I am rooting wildly for him. But I also feel tremendous solidarity with the Jewish people. These two things do not feel mutually exclusive.”  (WWD)

nina-garcia-google-glass

• Google Glass is making another appearance at New York Fashion Week this season, and though we might not see the high-tech specs on the runway again, they will definitely be part of the action. Marie Claire creative director Nina Garcia will cover the event using Google Glass, updating all her social media outlets (Vine, Marie Claire‘s website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) with the new technology. Garcia admits it took some practice figuring out how to use the darn thing. “I’m not going to say it came so easily,” she told WWD, but for her, it seems worth it; “It’s a hands-free experience which is kind of liberating. I can go to a show and just be and not be looking down at my iPhone all the time.” The initiative is branded as giving folks a chance to “Be Nina.” Sounds like quite an innovative way to cover NYFW! It will be interesting to see how the Google Glass affects the quality of her posts. (WWD)
