The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Jennifer Lopez to Headline Gucci ‘Sound of Change’ Concert, John Galliano Will Not Attend Met Gala, and Janelle Monáe’s Music Video for ‘Q.U.E.E.N.’

Jennifer Lopez has been added to the roster for Gucci‘s upcoming Chime for Change benefit concert, The Sound of Change Live. The singer will join the ranks of Beyoncé, John Legend, Rita Ora, Timbaland, Iggy Azaela, and more. (WWD)

John Galliano has been slowly re-emerging onto the fashion scene with his residency at Oscar de la Renta‘s studio, and teaching gig at Parsons School of Design. Some of his work is even being displayed as part of the Costume Institute’s Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibition. But don’t expect to see him at the Met Gala. Galliano’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, says the designer plans on taking things slow, and such a high-profile appearance might not be best at the moment: “One step at a time,” she said, adding, “and that’s one huge mother f – – kin’ staircase.” You ain’t never lied! • Virgin Atlantic flight attendant wardrobes are about to pack a serious punch. The airline has tapped Vivienne Westwood to create new uniforms for their flight staff. Female attendants will be outfitted in a “red suit, nipped at the waist and curved at the hip, features strategically placed bust pleats as well as a dart and double pleat in the back.” Gentlemen will wear burgundy three-piece suits with “gray, shadowlike details under the lapels and pockets.” The uniforms, made with sustainable materials, will make their debut next year. Janelle Monáe‘s dropped the video for ‘Q.U.E.E.N.,’ her collaboration with Erykah Badu, and OH MY GOODNESS SHE’S WEARING A DRESS. Yes, Ms. Monáe, noted for her uniform tuxedo looks, has ditched the pants and button down, instead opting for a mod-style graphic striped black and white bodycon dress. Get into it! • Don’t expect any costumery and buffoonery from Nicki Minaj at next week’s Met Gala. The rapstress and American Idol judge will be outfitted in Calvin Klein for the occasion, who, as we know, doesn’t really create pieces suitable for Minaj’s wackier alter-egos. As of late, the rapper has been sporting a more toned-down look, and I wager this one will be more subdued and elegant than her usual fare. (WWD)

J.C. Penney is sorry it’s been so lame recently, and really wants you to come back and be its friend again. The retailer’s latest ad campaign admits the re-branding scheme devised by recently-ousted CEO Ron Johnson was less than successful, and for this, they are sincerely regretful.  “Some changes you liked and some you didn’t, but what matters from mistakes is what we learn,” they say in the ad. “We learned a very simple thing, to listen to you. To hear what you need, to make your life more beautiful.” They end with a plea: “Come back to J.C. Penney. We heard you. Now, we’d love to see you.” Did you stop shopping at JCP? Will you come back now that they’ve asked so nicely? (WWD)
