One in Three Americans Shop to Relieve Stress; Do You?
By Claire

A recent survey conducted by Huffington Post revealed what we all may have already known: one in three Americans shop to relieve stress.
They extrapolate to say that said statistic accounts for 91% of the population, explaining, “An online poll of over 1,000 U.S. adults…found that women were twice as likely as men to use retail therapy as a way to cope with stress (40 percent vs. 19 percent).” These same stress shoppers are liable to turn to food or exercise to deal with their problems–instead of facing their issues head on.

Shopping is now ‘part of the job’ for me, though I recall one time in the past when a bad breakup sent me straight to a local boutique, where I splurged on oodles of saucy wrap dresses–perfect pieces for a single girl on the town looking for a new suitor. Buying them definitely made me feel better, though I cringed at my credit card statement next month (those were the years I was deep in debt–read my testimony here).

I guess the key is to always keep it balanced, and make sure you’re buying what you can afford. Can’t get a new pair of shoes? Try a lipstick or nail polish.

At any rate, do you shop to relieve stress? Tell us in the comments!

*I know some of you will ask about Draya’s look. We wrote about it here.

  1. Cindy says:

I do it all the time but I usually return the items that I purchased. I make better fashion decisions when I’m not stressed.

  2. Nikki says:

I don’t shop out of stress…I shop purely out of boredom. I ain’t got no man, I’m living in a new city and don’t have ish to do when I’m not working. I feel like Samantha in the SATC movie…except that I can’t afford to shop so much. My new way of getting out of the house is going for long runs–really long runs.

  3. Allure says:

I am defnitely guilty of this!

  4. dolostar says:

For some reason I always feel better after I purchase something. My boyfriend has threatened the UPS and FedEx man to not deliver me anything anymore. Lol I must start saving more money though…I guess I shop because I don’t have any children yet, I figure I need to get it out of my system before that time comes.

  5. rampage says:

Yes!! I sure do. I’m an online shopper because of all the promo codes and free shipping. The UPS guy that comes to deliver my ” presents” comes at least once every week or two it seems. just like my name states, once I get home in the evening from work I go on an online rampage!

  6. Bianca says:

I am definitely and stress shopper. It calms my nerves and helps me process the days events…

i absolutely stress shop. && stress excercise

  12. sadie says:

I eat! I spend maybe $100 a month on clothing and shoes. I shop clearance,ebay,amazon,and.craigslist. I have a friend who lives to shop, but she thinks looks are more important.

  13. I wouldn’t consider myself a stress shopper, as I am not usually stressed out. However, I used to shop way more than I do now and am a notorious returner. My friend once told me that I like the satisfaction of buying things, but once the thrill is over I’m ready to return.

  14. dkny says:

I guess im spoiled. I have expensive pieces and bags in my closet but they were all given to me. I was a nanny for this super rich Brazilian family and she lavished me with purple lables. It was helpful that we wore the same size shoes and tops. I have a gorgeous ysl jacket that i can’t live without out. I love my jimmy choo bags. for my birthday last year she gave me her leather versace jackets and two pairs of her red bottoms. My closet is stacked. Good to know people in high places.

  15. Jihan says:

I DEFINITELY shop out of stress. My day job lately has been particularly stressful, and I find myself taking my lunch breaks to indulge in some retail therapy. J.Crew has been blessed with more of my coins than they should in recent weeks.

Stress and being bored are my triggers.

  17. Monet says:

I just love shopping point black period . I have to buy myself something every week like new shoes, maybe an outfit , or even new makeup to add to my collection . Shopping tends to make me happy . So that’s what I do.

  18. Crystal says:

Not really stress shop as I don’t really get ‘stressed.’ When I do, I meditate. Not in a guru type of way, just repeat scriptures and affirmations until my head is clear and my heart is light. I moreso shop out of boredom or to relieve anxiety or to just be myself for a minute or 2. I HATE shopping with others. I don’t have cc’s so I don’t worry about debt or I’d be in trouble. I find the silver lining in every decision I make so I guess I’d rather shop than eat, drink or smoke. I make a lot of returns as well. haha.

  19. JaneBMore says:

No ma’m. Being broke would stress me out even more.

I am an online shopper of high end merchandise, you can come out like a bandit if you are savvy and know when to catch the sales, plus it’s very entertaining.

  21. O. Roulette says:

Oh man im guilty of this and omg online shopping im the worse…smh at me

  22. tasha says:

Nope I dont at all. I just shop when I want to. Not for stress or anything like that. But since I run a business I tend to reinvest in my business than go shopping. I only want a couple things through out the year anyways. My purchases tend to be on the expensive side anyways

  23. binks says:

@JaneBMore AGREED! And most people struggle with their finances and is their TOP stressers so shopping as therapy wouldn’t ease stress per se. I just shop when i want too and when I have the means too.

  24. Kitty B. says:

Shopping makes me stress, so this definitely doesnt apply to me lol

I shop when needed or if I see something that must be mine right then and there.

  25. jackie says:

I would have to agree with some of the other ladies here, I shop more out of bordem. I use to be really bad, but now I can control my urges alot better. However, its not easy when you have so much social media outlets showing you some cute items and ideas for outfits. You just have to go out and see them with your own eyes on your day off, then you try them on, and the next thing you know you are bringing them home. However, good advice claire, def. buy what you can afford because I have seen how debt can ruin a person’s life first hand and it ain;t pretty.

  26. Angela says:

I used to shop to relieve stress when I had credit cards. But now that’s in the past being that I’m currently on my quest of being completely debt free. My stress reliever these days is having a glass of champagne with good friends and/or family.

  27. Blue Ivy Carter they love me in the street why you mad boo? Part 2 in 8 months says:

I love shopping. As a teenager i was over 220lb, eventually i was able to lose weight in ONE SUMMER!! i went from 220 to 165. So i think now its such a boost for me. Now im able to shop were regular people shop.

  28. Anonymous says:

Nope, spending money I don’t have/can’t afford to waste would stress me out more than anything.

  29. NYC chick says:

I also shop out of boredom. It feels good, but it is important to keep in check though. For those of you who shop high end online, how do you find your bargains? Are the “Guilts” of the world that good?

I live in NYC so I’m more likely to do my shopping in person. i work right next to Saks and every fabulous store imaginable is in walking distance, but if there are bargains to be had, I’d give it a try!

  30. PEACE says:

Shopping is my stress reliever it makes me happy! And I absolutely love love sales, clearance items!! Purchased a pair of Giuseppe’s for only 220 at Neiman Marcus!!!!! Purchased a Rebecca minkoff bag for only 100 bucks flat at Saks fifth!! And ordered some Donald j plainer loafers for only 25 bucks on amazon I purchased oscar de la renta sunglasses at marshalls for only ten bucks! I LOVE SHOPPING LOL!!

  31. marguerite says:

i just like to shop in general. do we need a reason?

  32. Krystel says:

Hell i know i do…shopping and getting my hair done relives any stress I have.

  33. lipstick_bandit says:

this is something i am too gulity of… however, i haven’t yet worked out the balancing or budgeting aspect thus far. ugggggh the life of a suburbanite trying to make it around the big city…splurging on vacations is much more rewarding in my opinion and @claire, as you so eloquently quoting in one of your founding posts,

“I was so upset when Daddy told me I had to get a job that I went shopping to calm down”–Reese Witherspoon as Jill Green on Friends

shopping is a legal drug none of us can shake…

GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY! I love to shop. Not like the ladies featured above, but I still

  35. LawyerLady says:

I don’t shop to relieve stress or boredom. I can relate to a lot of the ladies here though. Not having a certain dollar figure in my account stresses me out even more. I am super lucky that my mom loves to shop for me and sends me little care packages all the time – things I frankly can’t afford on my own. She also taught me not to go shopping for every event. She told me to build then trust my wardrobe. I use FBD and pintrest to help me remix the timeless items I already have.
