The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: Ottavio Missoni Dies, Phillip Lim Collaborates With Target, and Another Garment Factory Fire in Bangladesh
By The Fashion Bomb Staff

ottavio-missoni

• Ottavio Missoni, co-founder of Italian fashion house Missoni, passed away this morning at the age of 92. The designer had quite an illustrious career, first as a soldier in WWII, (he was captured by the Egyptians in El Alamein and held as a POW for four years), and as an Olympian at the 1948 London Olympics, where he met his wife and business partner, Rosita. The Missonis set up their brand soon after they wed, and quickly became popular for their aesthetic of mixing and matching colors and print, and, of course, their famous zigzag pattern. Ottavio died in the comfort of his home in Sumirago. (WWD)

Announcement Of The Nominees & Honorees For The CFDA Fashion Awards

• Phillip Lim is the latest designer to collaborate with Target on a men’s and women’s collection for fall 2013. Target has had its sights on the designer for quite some time, and their dreams of connecting with him have finally been realized in this 100+ piece offering consisting of apparel, accessories, and footwear. Called 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target, the collection is slated to drop September 15th, with prices ranging from $20-$300. Can’t wait to see what the designer has to offer! (WWD)

bangladesh-garment-fire

• It seems garment workers in Bangladesh just can’t catch a break. Yet another fire broke out at a factory in Dhaka yesterday, killing eight people including factory managing director Mahbubur Rahman. Thankfully, most of the workers had already left for the day, but the fact that more lives were lost, especially after 900+ people died in last month’s building collapse, and 111 passed in another factory blaze in November, is extremely troubling, to say the least. 18 opposition parties led by the Bangladesh National Party will strike today to protest the dangerous working conditions in serious need of reform. Hopefully no more people have to die in order for real change to be made! (WWD)

Chanel Iman Intern
Diana Wang, the former Harper’s Bazaar intern who famously filed a class-action lawsuit against Hearst for unpaid labor got some bad news today, as her case was just thrown out of court. Judge Harold Baer said they could not proceed as it did not meet the minimum qualifications for such a suit. Class-action suits have a “commonality” requirement, which this particular case did not fulfill as the complaining parties worked at different magazines, and were tasked with different duties. “Here, while a close question, the commonality requirement is not satisfied because plaintiffs cannot show anything more than a uniform policy of unpaid internship,” Baer explained. It might not be over for Wang & Company– if they’re looking for compensation for their work, they can choose to pursue individual suits. (Fashionista)

My heart goes out to the lives lost in the fire. It’s sickening that even with so many lives being lost, nothing is being done…and for what? All in the name of fashion? These companies can more the afford to regulate working conditions and have proper working standers for workers to prevent child labor and other labor related issues. I personally want to see something done about this. If I must refuse shopping at some stores to make a point, I will and I think everyone should rethink what companies they are supporting.

There is something very suspect going on in Bangladesh for these fires to have broken out and all the loss of life. A factory managing director has now died in another blaze? An article I read noted that it was suspected that irons could have caused the most recent fire. This is all seriously tragic and I can guarantee the prices on the garments that were previously made in these factories will go up. Across the globe, “fashionistas” need to be more conscious of the cost and price of fashion behind the scenes. The folks in the photo outside don’t appear to be sporting Benetton or other high priced duds. Just like the “blood diamonds” protests, it’s applicable in this case as well.
