Stacey writes, “I am 25 years old & a new mommy to an amazing baby boy who is now 7months. I am planning his 1st bday and now that I have finally picked a direction for the party I NEED to check outfits off the list. I didnt have a baby shower so this is my first chance to celebrate mommyhood and of course this will be a memory to forever have in the photo album. I would love for our ensembles to coordinate and was hoping for something sexy, comfortable and classy for myself. It will be in August but since I am on a budget I need to plan ahead. There isn’t a theme but the color scheme is royal blue, orange, green and brown. I am sure your other readers will appreciate this post since Mother’s Day is coming up as well. It would be amazing if you could feature a Mommy and Me “What to Wear” on your blog.”
Sure thing! Our What to Wear Internship contestant #2 came up with the following gems.
Enjoy!
She writes, “This $40 TOPSHOP cobalt blue number is charming with princess darts and A-line flair. Jazz up this bit of flirt with serious neck wear hinting blue tones. The 3.1 Phillip Lim 31 Hour tote is polished and doubles as a stash away of necessities for the little one.”

” To complete your look: add a chronological watch, a bright orange band, flat stud earrings and nude polished toes in these so-very-cute Rachel Zoe Gladys Camel Ankle-Cuff Flat Sandals. The birthday boy mirrors mommy’s look in a chunky stripey t-shirt and adorable stripey overalls. Check out the two-tone sneakers!”
Next, she writes, “We got you covered and fitted in a Clu Basic orange slim cardigan with a TOPSHOP tube skirt in navy and white contrasting stripes. Since you’ll be running after the one-year-old birthday boy and friends, March23 Wedges in orange is a great contender!”

” Another option is TOPSHOP’s Calf Skater skirt in bright orange perfectly colorblocking with Karl Lagerfield’s sleeveless shirt. But top this look with JIL Sander Wedges. Statement earrings and neck wear along with a chronological watch is all you need! The birthday boy is going for his own stripey polo shirt from Zara and adding a bit of fun with J. Crew’s superimposed lobster shorts—too cute! Finish the adorableness with a neon braided belt, colorful stripey socks (both from J.Crew) and Zara’s Vintage Basketball hi-top sneakers.”
Lastly, she says, “Everyone looks great in a flattering A-line skirt; this green TOPSHOP number is no different. The mommy of the 1-year-old birthday boy can compliment the pleated piece with a ruffle bodice playsuit to pull in the midsection or go with a stripey button-down classic shirt.”

“Colorblocking with a thin orange belt is superb—either way! Playful much? Rock the stripey scarf as a quasi turban. Can’t forget the wrist candy as the Michael Kors tote is being handled. And the little one? He has his own stripes paired with white suspender shorts, finishing with Zara Nautical Plimsoll sneakers. Don’t forget to change out the laces for whimsical fun.”
There you have it! These are super thorough. I’m impressed!
What do you think of Intern 2′s suggestions for a Mommy and Me engagement?

Congrats to the mommy! I also have an 8 month little boy and have been thinking about his first party. I personally think the baby boy outfits are totally cute, but the outfits for the mom are a miss to me. If anybody knows that when there are tons of kids around, especially little ones, we want to be cute but also need to be comfy. Lots of accessories will be a problem b/c their little hands love to pull on necklaces, bracelets and rip earrings out of the ear. Also, think of messy cake and icecream getting on that blue dress? I don’t think it will work.

How cute are these options. Being a mom, who is planing my sons first birthday, I really appreciate this request.
March 18, 2013 2:09 pm
These outfits are cute but a little unrealistic for a kids birthday party. I dont know about any other moms but my sons party are always filled with me running around chasing kids, cleaning up messes and trying to do all the last minutes things on my list. Plus with the cake, ice cream and any other snacks you are on some sort of clean up duty. I would get rid of the skirts and add pants, shorts, or even a romper. Its best to be comfy and skirts just always make me feel tight. If you were adding someones else birthday party the looks would be good.
March 18, 2013 2:20 pm
A pants option should have been included.
March 18, 2013 2:30 pm
I like the first look the best because it is simple but practical because regardless of what you wear you can’t avoid getting messy anyway.
March 18, 2013 2:42 pm
I’m wondering if this intern is actually a mom – of a toddler at that! Now don’t get me wrong I always attempt to look fly when I am hosting anything but as the mom of a little boy who just turned 3 I know there is no way in heck I would be planning a flouncy dress. I’ve worn heels to each of his parties and even that is a sacrifice bc by the end the night of me running around to do this and that my feet are killing me. But I’m always in some cute skinny jeans type of outfit, NEVER would it be a flouncy dress or a fitted skirt! This whole post needs a second try.
March 18, 2013 2:58 pm
I love the looks however like some of the commenters mentioned unrealistic but i see where you were going. As a mom of a 7 year old…his 1st birthday was me running around like a bat out o hell chasing him around…lol I had on a fitted sweatsuit in black with my 54 11s lol comfortable yet chic baby bag in tow and studs in my ear because he was too fascinated with tugging my earrings!
March 18, 2013 3:02 pm
I agree with the moms that posted above! Skirt/Dresses are a baaaaad idea! The last look made me laugh out loud with the playsuit option! That looks so uncomfertable to wear to a toddler’s birthday party. My son is 3 now and for his first i rocked cute flats, print leggings, and a tunic! I was cute and able to run around after my lil man who had just started walking that month.
Stacey baby birthdays are as much a celebration for you as it is for your little one so no matter the attire it will always be a great memory you’ll hold onto forever.
March 18, 2013 3:07 pm
I echo everyone else here, a dress/skirt is impractical at a one year old’s b-day party but i love the colors. As the mother of twin boys, i would suggest a cute short/top combo or a romper. Definitely flats, ankle strap studded sandals or ankle strap low wedged sandals. keep it simple and cute. however, the looks above would be cute for a first mother’s day, awww.
March 18, 2013 3:10 pm
All of those outfits for mom are a total miss. You have to bend over and pick up small children. You have to bend over and clean up spills. It’ll be summer. If you want to do a dress, do a maxi. But I’d recommend shorts, a great machine-washable top and flat sandals. And a great big fabulous purse in lieu of a diaper bag.
March 18, 2013 3:21 pm
I appreciate the recommendations. I remember my son’s parties and my outfits were simple and carefree. From the suggestions above I think only capris, trouser jeans or a jumpsuit were missing. I love the bag options, the colors and coordinating with the little one. I’d like to see more!
March 18, 2013 3:23 pm
i’m not a mom and i know these options don’t make any sense. maybe for someone GOING to a toddler’s birthday but even then you’ll look over dressed and completely out of place. like…where are you going dressed like that?
the options are cute but not for a toddlers bday.
March 18, 2013 4:49 pm
Thank you Law Diva 1908. I burst out laughing when I saw these suggestions. I does not seem like this person has even been near a toddler let alone a party for one. sigh
March 18, 2013 5:14 pm
These suggestions are amazing! Though I do agree with the other commenters that a more comfortable possible pant outfit is more suitable when dealing with mommy duties. Nevertheless I have better direction in putting together an ensemble for myself.
Thank you so much for answering my fashion inquiry and helping me check this one off my list!

If you wanted to do a follow-up feature, maybe for mothers day, I would also include fashion inspirations from mommy and son/daughter duos.. specifically my inspiration Alicia Keys and son Egypt!
March 18, 2013 5:33 pm
everything is cool until u get to the white handbag. White handbags and toddlers don’t mix. AT ALL!!!
March 18, 2013 5:55 pm
I thought as much when I first saw the post.Very impractible ideas.Intern 1 is definitely still in the lead.
March 18, 2013 6:15 pm
There are over three options here, why all the fuss over the blue dress…which I love! And would wear to my daughter’s birthday party. But I’m a young mom who can handle heels…and (love the) extra jewelry. Cute options! Thanks!

There are three options, why fuss over the blue dress…which I would wear! Some mothers can wear heels, others can’t. This mom so would! And, yes, to my daughter’s birthday party. I’m big on the fab jewelry too—all of it. Thanks for the post!
March 18, 2013 8:23 pm
would have loved to see an outfit with pants
March 18, 2013 11:21 pm
Outfit 1 is doable; love the flats and the purse as well as the outfit for toddler. Option two provides two outfits, I would do the wedge sneakers and cardi but not with a skirt on outfit 1; outfit two is out all together for a toddler party although the look is cute and the wedges are haute. Love the toddler look in option two as well. The only thing I like about option three is the toddler outfit, the rest is impractical for the occasion.
March 19, 2013 5:18 am
And, this is what i mean…perhaps that white girls idea featured here..as a style tip…ijs…the bodycon skirt would work n most leave you the one less likely to be cleaning spills
March 19, 2013 7:09 am
I agree with all the moms who’ve commented. Though the above outfits are cute, they are totally impractical when you’ve got a bunch of kids running around and a thousand things to do. Would’a liked to see an outfit including pants/jeans and a cute top or something to that effect!
March 19, 2013 9:44 am
Um this is not an adult party….wear something that is comfy so you can get after your baby if you need to. Girl…drop another one…you’ll get that sometimes it is practicality over the latest fashion……
March 19, 2013 9:50 am
As a mother who has gone through that stage – you will need something comfortable, there willl be a lot of bending, running, wiping of hands, food & juice spills, crying, etc. Practicality honey. Sexy time is your alone time.
March 19, 2013 10:17 am
I don’t see why all the mothers are hating on these options. I’m a preschool teacher and I have a class of 11 3 and 4 year olds all day. That doesn’t mean I can wear a skirt or nice top to work! Granted it wont be anything expensive, but all the teachers manage to look very nice without cutting back on style. And i’ve been to parties where the mommy was stylish and comfortable (maybe it’s a NYC thing). The only change I would make to this is flats instead of heels. But as always, these are just suggestions, the mom can tweak it and twerk it however.

Just a note–the dress featured in Look #1 is actually this dress:

It retails for $100.

Im not a mom, but as someone who is actively involved with two young godchildren, I will have to agree that some of these options are a bit impractical for a 1yr old birthday party. They are amazing choices for any other event (Im stealing inspiration from them asap!), but I know that it would be a hassle to run around with a toddler in a skirt or dress and worrying about kneeling or bending over.
A pants or shorts options wouldve have been nice to see. Even a fun jumpsuit with sandals.
March 19, 2013 11:38 am
And thank you Jen for the correct info on that dress! I knew that $40 price tag was too good to be true! LOL
March 19, 2013 1:06 pm
All these looks are SPOT ON if you plan on having the following present at the party: a full-time Nanny, a party coordinator, a caterer, and a waitstaff to serve and clean after the children.. oh and don’t forget the bubble you will need to stand in to protect yourself from ketchup, punch, milk, cake frosting, snot and pee.
I’m pretty sure this is the 2nd fail post I’ve seen on this blog concerning fashion requests for children’s birthday parties. If you are going to go into this arena (particularly suggesting children’s clothing.. I’m not even going to touch that), I would suggest consulting with an actual mom or two, first.

Just what i was looking for. My son is a Month and 2 weeks old ’1st Child’ was invited to a birthday party wasn’t sure how to suit us up. This post really has helped to assemble an outfit for us. Thanks! Love this Blog xoxo
