Show Review: DKNY Fall 2013

DKNY is having quite the moment, due to the brand’s recent collaboration with Opening Ceremony. The limited-edition collection of reissued ’90s styles has caught on with the young and hip fashionable set, giving Donna Karan’s sportier sister brand some street cred. The label definitely plays with ’90s silhouettes and its signature sportswear aesthetic for Fall 2013, though with a sophisticated spin. From oversized, knee-length nylon jackets to colorblock scuba-inspired dresses, the DKNY girl is a bit more serious and utilitarian for the season, without totally eschewing her fun and playful side.

Colorblocking is on high, combining the season’s neutrals on roomy coats, form-fitting frocks, and structured knits.

One cannot have a collection without leather this season and paneling and trim in the material give an edge to a zip-front bomber jacket, quilted rounded-hem sweatshirt, and a long-sleeve flare dress.

Karan knows better than most that the ’90s are back and she channels the fashionable decade with knit beanies, a quilted leather bomber jacket, boxy cropped denim topper, and more.

She then gives a modern spin to the trend with leopard print: both traditional and in eye-catching orange and pink iterations. The pattern even spills onto accessories with foldover flap clutches, point-toe pumps, roomy carryalls, and Fall-ready booties all covered in the feral formation.

The collection’s predominantly neutral palette is offset with hot pink and cobalt for refreshing jolts of color.

DKNY isn’t normally a go-to brand for more formal events, but a couple of sheer chiffon-paneled blouses with floor-length trains might just work on the red carpet with a mini skirt. The collection also offers some very Prince circa the ’90s-esque crop top and wide-leg pants looks: not sure if they’ll be flattering in real-time, but there’s a possibility for a chic pairing with statement jewelry and a sleek chignon.
