At his Fall 2013 collection at Hudson Hotel, Laquan Smith divulged his inspirations for the season. He said, “There were a lot of different inspirations at work. There was the hip hop feeling of Lil Kim in the 90’s. The Crush on You element, hence me using the consistency of the pony fur. I was also inspired by Strangé, the character played in Boomerang by Grace Jones. There was also the element of James Bond. I loved the fact that Bond Girls had so many different personalities. Grace Jones and Halle Berry played in Boomerang and they both were Bond Girls. So I found my niche, and went in that direction. I wanted to use really strong, vivid, black and white, and do it in a way that was me: representfing New York, and a [youthful] sensibility.” Smith’s inspirations came to life by way of cropped tops, high slit mini skirts, and short dresses, fashioned out of leather and PVC vinyl, and trimmed with lace and fur.
Models offered their best strangé poses in close fit perforated leather dresses and bodysuits, offset by dark lips and black/white manicures.
A cranberry mock neck shift offered the only suggestion of color in the otherwise black and white color palette.
The great thing about black and white: it goes with everything and can fit seamlessly into any wardrobe. I found myself falling in love with a few more conservative options, including a fur tipped long sleeve dress, and could see Fashion Bomb readers ponying up to a few star printed pieces.
The more risqué options will undoubtedly find their place in a music video or on stage. Laquan said, “[I could see this collection on] Azealia Banks, Eve, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, J.Lo,…they embody a certain confidence. It’s youthful, it’s tasteful, it’s luxe.”
