Givenchy’s Spring 2013 collection was decidedly wispy and feminine, with sheer fabrics and ruffles galore. For Pre-Fall 2013, Riccardo Tisci has gone in an obviously masculine direction, chock full of leather, brogues, and skirts layered over trousers, à la Kanye West. Back again are the fashion houses religious-inspired graphic tees, just in case you didn’t get enough of them in 2012. With a Fall-perfect color palette, I can already feel the fashion industry’s “It” girls and celebrities itching to get their manicured hands on a piece or two from the offerings.
Tisci took inspiration from the work of Italian architect and designer Giò Ponti. The influence is blatant in the geometric prints, clean lines, and symmetry of the designs. Eye-catching abstract patterns uplift simple knits and skirts, as well as leather pants and jackets, upping the modernity quotient of the collection.
Exotics anyone? Printed pony hair makes a splash on trousers, brogues, and a leather-sleeve sweater, while fur vests add a touch of luxury to layered looks.
Despite the heavy masculine undertones, the collection is not bereft of femininity detailing with peeks of lace and sheer detailing providing a romantic juxtaposition to the strong textures and colors of the designs.
There are only two red carpet-ready gowns in the offerings, but the ruffle-detailed pieces will surely work for stylish events and cocktail parties. I expect to see Givenchy aficionados like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian in these looks, though the latter might have a bit of trouble with the presence of her baby bump.
What do you think?
