The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: One Piece Swimsuits Are Back In Style, The Gap Buys Intermix, and Israel Places Ban on Underweight Models

    by Jihan

    • A New York post piece titled Buh-Bye Bikini asserts the resurgence of one piece swimsuits in lieu of barely there two pieces. Writer Sarah Fones says, “The itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny two-piece is no longer the automatic weapon in a woman’s beach wardrobe, as proved by celebs like Rihanna, Kate Moss, Stephanie Seymour and Beyoncé, who’ve all donned more demure maillots on vacation in 2012.” Swimsuit designer Malia Mills accredits this more covered up trend to the popularity of social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest, saying, “We know the world is a stage now more than ever before, with the individual stepping into the spotlight…The one-piece is an outfit in and of itself — a statement piece that says I dare to be different.” This is surely a relief for those of us having a hard time heading back to the gym. (New York Post)

    • It’s official! Gap Inc. has bought luxury retailer Intermix for $130 million. While you were trying to figure out which sparkly dress you were going to spill champagne on New Year’s Eve, Gap and Intermix were busy closing the lucrative deal. Co-founder and CEO of Intermix, Khajak Keledjian says the merge “will enable us to have more time to focus on growth. One reason for our success is [being] an incubator for new designers and new talent. [Partnering with Gap] will let us focus more on product, merchandising and innovation.” (WWD)

    • Pendleton is launching a heritage brand called the Thomas Kay Collection. The label, known for its Navajo-inspired prints and cozy fabrics, will offer wares for men, women, and home. “We really focused on what we would consider iconic Pendleton, and that would be starting out with our mill fabric,” said Elliot Hoshor, Pendleton’s senior men’s wear designer, and the man behind the Thomas Kay Collection. “All of the inspiration is based around the history of the company… All of the details are either taken from an original garment that we made or something that is so original and classic that it’s a staple” And get ready for some covetable staples. WWD says the Thomas Kay range will offer everything from traditional, tweedy hunting blazers to lace cardigans. Hmm… sounds pretty chic! Think you’ll be buying? (WWD)

    • Here’s a look at Dior‘s (rather surreal) Spring 2013 campaign, shot by Willy Vanderperre. What do you think? (Dior)

    • Lacquerheads, rejoice! OPI‘s teaming up with Disney once again on a range for the upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful film. The 7-piece line does not skimp on sparkle (four of the 7 colors are full of glittery goodness, with one “liquid sand” shade, which is basically just matte glitter), but also features three peachy, pinky sheer hues. What say you, Bombers? Think you’ll be picking up a bottle? (OPI Facebook)

    • Israel has put its ban on underweight models into effect. The new law bans models with a BMI below 18.5 from appearing in campaigns in the country. The law also requires models to provide medical proof of their weight, and demands that brands and publications state when they’ve Photoshopped images of their models. What do you think? Is the law a step in the right direction, or a little heavy-handed? (Vogue UK)

Good on Israel! Good to see a nation carving out their own beauty ideals and not blindly following western practices.

Right, I hate when someone declares that something is back “in” style. Like come on, one piece bathing suits never went out in the first place. Actually, one pieces with sexy cut-outs are hotter than most bikinis.

Those laws about models need to be enforced in the U.S, U.K and Milan ASAP. Kudos to Isreal (never thought I’d find myself saying that)

ugh are people still whining about photoshop?some people really need a healthy dose of self esteem.but im glad about the ban on too skinny models, because young girls looking so fragile like that cant be healthy.

Yes Israel! Models that are underweight do not look good at all; this is a needed measure.

I love one piece bathing suits. Hopefully now there will be more of a selection. Its hard trying to find a sexy one piece.

No sparkly red for the Oz Collection? Something about that isnt right…

Other countries need to follow Isreal’s lead with banning underweight models. I know the US won’t do it. The merge of Gap/Intermix should be nice.

I’m underwhelmed by the colors for the Oz collection. No green? No red? Where does the pink come in? :\

I am intrigued by the liquid sand though.
