So we’ve been getting tons of What to Wear requests, so much so that I’ve decided to roll several into one post!
What I can say: before sending these in, please look at our What to Wear section. Sometimes a look you could wear while skiing could work for a night of ice skating. Just because a post says, “What to Wear to a Holiday Party,” doesn’t mean you can only wear it to that occasion (perhaps it can work for a charity function?).
That said, let’s take a crack at this month’s most pressing inquiries!
Talya writes, “I’m coming to NY for a few days before Christmas and I think my boyfriend might propose. (Might). It will probably be outside, but it might be in a restaurant! At any rate, can y’all do a what to wear to be proposed to? That would be super helpful.”
For a night on the town, opt for 70′s glamour by slipping on brown tones by way of a dark brown pencil skirt and a pussy bow blouse. Stay toasty in an Yves Salomon fur, and finish your look off with leopard booties. This could also work well for a dressy work engagement.
Going for a more casual vibe? Slip on a bright coat and an equally bright hat.
Add a stylish twist with leopard pumps and a leopard bag:
Shayna is celebrating her engagement with photos! She writes, “My fiance and I will be taking our engagement photos in a few weeks in the chilly November air. I am hoping you could help me find some looks that still look chic in chilly temps! “
Show off your fashionable side with a leopard coat, then punch it up with a bright dress, like Alexander Wang’s Paprika draped number. If you want to go for slacks, bet on black, and jazz the ensemble up with a striped sweater:
Maiko says, “My husband will be home at the end of the month after 8 months deployment =] I have no clue what would be a perfect outfit for the occasion. I will be at the pier and will most likely be waiting for hours in a windy, and chilly day. I would like something flirty but comfortable to stand for hours.”
Be a vision in white in a white hooded coat from American Eagle and a white turtleneck. Add a snazzy touch with a Burberry scarf and Céline bag in suede. Protect your hairstyle with chic ear muffs and stay super warm in furry Coach boots:
Kimmie types, ” I’m attending a baby shower for my best friend and am clueless as to what I should wear. I am from the south and it’s usually no colder than 70 degrees but that has changed due to this 45-50 degree weather we have been getting. I am versatile with styles and am able to rock anything but in this situation I am stuck.”
You’re lucky to be in the South, as you can rock a simple fur vest and still be relatively warm. Slip a faux fur creation over a nubby sweater and complete with metallic jeans and studded flats. Add a flourish of Tom Ford Black Orchid perfume to finish:
Lastly, Philip writes, “My sister and I will be attending the upcoming Inauguration. It’s gonna be kinda cold during that time but we wanted to show some style despite the weather all while showing support for the POTUS. Any suggestions for us? Thank you!”
For both you and your sister, I’d focus on wearing a bright, warm coat. Layer with a turtleneck and black pants (noone’s going to see ‘em) and keep your toes warm with shearling lined Uggs:

Awesome post! You are totally right about the power of a bright coat. The only thing I would change is to trade out some of the fur with more silk and wool, which are both amazing fabrics for staying warm, but also breathable.
You nailed the important points about layering and using accessories to the fullest. I would add that fleece-lined leggings are the bomb, especially when spending significant time outside. Fleece-lined leggings can be found on Amazon for a steal and in tons of colors. They look great with a short flirty dress and cute boots or booties. I rocked that yesterday actually.

@Talecia, I heard it was bitterly cold last time, so I think the weather will truly dictate how layered you need to be. I love this outfit but my goal is to be super warm. Great post Claire!

Great inspirations! But I was at inauguration last year and you will freeze to death in that outfit. Fashion is the last thing you need to be worried about. The crowds start to get thick around 7 am and you will be walking and standing for hours on end (metro gets insanely crowded and backed up before and after). I think I was outside from 6am – 5pm in 2009. So wear layers upon layers and bring those portable hand warmers. Good luck to all the inauguration attenders, I will be watching from the comfort of home and possibly attending a gala or two here in DC :-)

Love the outfits and the posts on the conditions for inauguration. I had local family & friends stay home due to the chilly conditions. I’m contemplating a bus trip up there from ATL. We’ll see!

I absolutely love the first outfit and the baby shower suggestion. In terms of the inauguration, I agree. Wrap up and wear comfortable shoes. It was FREEZING (not cold) last time.
